Put a marker down to stop the racist onslaught against Travellers Ireland’s all-Traveller forum, Minceirs Whiden, has called for a vigil or picket of the British Embassy in Ballsbridge, this Friday, 16 September, from 12.30 pm to 2 pm. The vigil has been called in solidarity with the families who are facing eviction from their own land at Dale Farm, in Essex, where Basildon Council have put aside an £18 million budget to bulldoze the site and forcefully evict the families (a staggering figure when you consider that in 2010 the total UK budget for providing Travellers with halting facilities was less than 30 million). Dale Farm is a halting site which is also the largest concentration of Irish Travellers in Britain, being home to over 1000 people (about 100 families), many of whom are said to have their cultural roots in Rathkeale in Limerick. It was started in the 1960s when a number of families bought the former scrapyard site and Basildon council granted planning permission for 40 houses. This happened in the context of broad progress in race relations and a brief breeze of relative official tolerance for Travellers, epitomised in the liberal-sponsored 1968 Caravan Sites Act. |

Traveller in eviction row owns Limerick ghost estate
THIS is the 33-unit housing estate in Co Limerick owned by one of the Irish Travellers living on the controversial and illegal Dale Farm camp in England.
The substantial detatched houses, which could sell for over €400,000 each, have been under construction since 2004.
Irish Travellers living on England’s largest illegal halting site at Dale Farm in Essex face eviction next week.
The Traveller, who can’t be identified because he shares the same name with five other Travellers on the Dale Farm site, became the title holder of the ‘ghost’ estate in Rathkeale, Co Limerick last year.
It is one of the few estates in the country where construction has continued -- albeit at a slow pace -- since the collapse of the Celtic Tiger.
A prior applicant successfully lodged planning permission with the local authority for the houses in Rathkeale, where there is a large Traveller population.

I won't be joining in this picket.
This is because I believe that the planning laws in the UK are being adhered to. I don't see what is wrong with applying the law to each individual regardless of origin or ethnicity and I don't see any compelling reasons why the planning laws should not apply in this case.
If reports of some of the travellers owning properties in Rathkeale are true, I see even less reason that they should be allowed to remain on land they bought for a pittance and built unlawfully on.
Its up on BBC(dont write off the Beeb yet, good coverage betimes, off to the side)and guardian.
Ugly fucking images, britannia with her filthy drawers down.
