You cannot get it out of their heads after a century that Home Rule will bring them the millennium."
McCabe is right, but the debates on the Home Rule Bill in 1912-14 show that even the proposed Home Ruled Ireland was going to be poorer as a result. The Brits sweetened it by offering to make up any deficits for the first 6 years. After 1919 you can add in the costs of sovereignty (embassies, armies) and the independence and civil wars, and the exodus of thousands of richer types, and you had a recipe for poverty. We have a lot to think about on the run-up to the 1916 centenary.
Looks like a better examination than the vultures flock wheeling round the issue on my Sunday radio for their pickings.
