A famous study from 2003 was touted as showing that monkeys reject "unequal pay". However, a more recent shows that the original interpretation was wrong. So, no, monkeys don?t have much to teach us about fairness.

Modern politicians lack the personal authority of ancient kings and so they appeal to The Science to impose their schemes on the population. This is how science becomes corrupted by politics, says Prof James Alexander.

Why has the crisis failed to bring us together

category national | worker & community struggles and protests | other press author Wednesday November 02, 2011 00:30author by An Puc ar Buile Report this post to the editors

This article questions why the current crisis has so far failed to bring us together as a people and why, in the face of the prospect of economic meltdown, we're still merrily clinging to the status quo of individualism and conservatism. It also asks what role a progressive nationalism has to play in getting us out of the crisis.

One answer is provided by a letter in today's Myerish Times from a geography teacher decrying the elimination of History and Geography as subjects in our schools.

I'd write to them and explain that its because the powers that thrive prefer us disoriented both in space and time; and if possible kept nervous..it adds to the neurotic consumerism syndrome that feeds their economy.
And of course the less historic orientation, the easier the task for the revisionist industry. But they dont print such nonsense.

Another of course is the TV programming of US bling-worship and the general dumbing down of half-witticisms masquerading as 'cutting-edge' comedy, the elevation of competition uber alles(not least through the commercialisation and incessant bombardment of childern's games for adult entertainment). Its called sport, but its ethical content can be evaluated from the cynical discussions around 'professional fouls' and their advisability that emanate from the ethical and intellectual vacuum that would embarrass a sharp three-year old.

And then we have the viral mutation of PD neo-con greed as a cultural contagion throughout our politics and media, to the extent that we can rail against McG &Co as 'gunmen' while turning blind eyes to illegal war-facilitation, 'special reditions' and torture; for the sake of the economic benefits to Shannon.

Which in turn brings us to the centralising of ALL political debate into the dominant PD neo-conservative economic paradigm that cannot be questioned as it has replaced the infaliblity of Rome in our long-theologised psyche, which makes it extremel painful for our propagandised and alcohol-conditioned population to THINK. Sin tosnu. The somnolence will continue for a while longer. Stirrings, however are detectable.
