Indeed, that is an excellent article Opus. It's well past time that the leaderships of the what's left of the Irish Left put their hands in the air and came clean with their followers. They were seduced and duped by the spectacle of citizens taking to the streets. They totally suspended any critical facility they ever might have had - and ended up supporting crazed racist lynch mobs in Libya - some of whom had been very close to themselves.

..but I'd second you on that. Yesterdays bombs in Baghdad are from the same Saudi source(mother of all al Qaidas) and play to the racist neo-nazi Zionist strategy of global balkanisation as envisioned by Nazism itself. In short, its just the latest manifestation of the imperial divide and conquer strategy. Hence Gaddafi's AU support had to be binned, as have all chances of Arab unity or Islamic solidarity. Only place it is finally being rolled back is Latin America. Watch THAT space.

A good article on Syria, which gives a very clear insight into what has happened in Libya, and why no progressive with half a brain would give any support to this sectarian campaign: http://www.voltairenet.org/Free-Syrian-Army-commanded-by Two slogans of the so called "FSA" : "Every Alawait in his grave, and Christains out of Syria." One thing the article misses in OP is the fact that Qatar are not backing just any Islamists. They are only backing Sunni Islamists. This is primarily a sectarian campaign - against Shia people (the Alawaits are a type of Shia). And that's why Israel and the US are backing these campaigns. The Arab \ Israeli conflict is being replaced with the Sunni \ Shia conflict.

Irish republicans didn't give a damn about Libyan people when Giddaffi sent explosives to them on the Marita Ann boat. They didn't give a damn about Irish people either. It was Irish people who were killed.

After the slavish collaboration of certain degenerate elements in the Irish, so-called, Left, along with certain fake "anti-war" movements (numbering CIA bagmen among their membership), with the racist Nato lynch mobs, it was good to see people who dared to stand up to imperialism and stand by the Green Resistance in Libya. We have received many messages of thanks from our comrades in Libya. It is a great encouragement to them to know that they are not alone. The Libyan people did not leave the Irish people alone in our hour of need. They gave the Irish people the means to defend themselves. The Irish people would show themselves to be spineless curs if we failed to support the Patriots of Libya, as they undertake the great task of defeating the Nato genocidist rats.

When he was alive I used to regard Gadhafi as a bit of a buffoon who 'went native' by living in a heavily guarded tent, and made bombastic speeches about Africa and the imperialst machinations of its enemies. Since the NATO cynical use of the No Fly resolution of the UN and the incompetent and bloody campaign by the rebels I have mixed feelings about the overthrown dictator. I understand that he used a lot of oil revenue to develop the schooling system in his country and to expand the health services. I gather that women improved their lot compared to what happened under previous regimes. I just don't know at the moment if Libyan women and others will get a fair deal under the new administration. I am also not sure if the present government will be able to satisfy the tribal rivalries around the country.

Lybians with the help of thousands of bombardments from NATO, secret services from at least 6 different countries, plus 6,000 Qatar troops. Quite a sovereign movement alright...

Had a peek at your youtube DD - you seem fixated with the dictator Gadaffi. So six or seven dissident republican thugs with a starry plough turned up to your shindig. Well done. But linking the Libyan despot and your mob to Pearse, Connolly etc (true Patriots) is taking the piss! Are you a stand up comic in real life?

I still say its time we organised a memorial for the unknown civilian. Too much collateral damage. And the arms industry laughs all the way to the offshore bank cartel.

When you have a member of your family blown to smithereens by British Forces-as I have-you, if you are mature, learn to despise all war, which I do. Yes, if someone tries to break into my house and kill my family, I will defend myself. Your naive view of the IRA'S noble, anti-imperialist war does not reflect the facts of what started out, in the late 60's, as a rational response to state oppression of catholics, degenerated into thuggery and criminality. Don't give me all that how Ghadaffi was a great supporter of the Irish struggle for freedom crap. Welcome to planet earth, where life is complex and nuanced. Rather than argue about this why not agree that ALL war commemorations be banned and let's celebrate people who work at community level and achieve real things for ordinairy people. They are the heroes.

why is it any different to salute the bravery of soldiers in gadaffis army that died bravely in combat than soldiers in any other army that died bravely in combat? They are all doing the same thing. Killing people for money and to keep their governments in power.

So this is as appropriate a use of the garden of rememberance as anything else.

But as the highly conditioned zombie sheep of imperialism we're supposed to think certain wars are special in some way

balderdash.

At least gadaffi helped arm us in our struggle against imperialism. What did the british army ever do for us except kill and oppress us? Why remember troops who fought in their imperialist wars?

about what is disgusting here. I have no time for the US armed forces or other agents of a corporatist/imperialist agenda. I am too well informed and old to think otherwise, however, my comment-I sincerely apologise if it was in bad taste-was a response to the glorification of Ghadaffi. No doubt that the UN/US/Britain has an agenda and cruelly pursued it, however, make no mistake that the enemy of my enemy is not our friend, at least not in this case.

the line of this thread is utterly disgusting-making jokes about the filmed rape and slaughter of a human being no matter who they are is so adolescent it is something who would expect to hear from US soldiers.

Good spoof. Almost thought you were serious until I read the "Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya" bit. And doncha just love the bit about maintaining the dignity of the occasion. Priceless. Nothing like taking the piss out of the grandiose bombastic language these dictators used. Well done, A.D.D.
