press release

No Evictions, No Repossessions Occupy Belfast Protest, City Hall Saturday 14th January 1pm Affordable Housing for Everyone- No Evictions, No Repossessions Occupy Belfast Protest, City Hall Saturday 14th January 1pm Affordable Housing for Everyone- No Evictions, No Repossessions There is a growing housing crisis in Northern Ireland that Occupy Belfast believes to be a systematic failure in our society. The government both at Stormont and Westminster, have passed austerity on to the most vulnerable citizens due to the failure of the richest 1%, to regulate their financial system. Politicians, bankers and developers are to blame for this scenario, and the ordinary people are being made to suffer. We believe that a home should be a right not a commodity that can be taken away by the instability of market forces. Homelessness effectively casts citizens of this country out of society. We believe that it is the unfettered pursuit of profit that should be cast out of society. This year in Northern Ireland- Repossessions have increased 11%, (and 51% in the last 5 years) Writs were served to 1,872 home owners Homelessness has increased 30% 945 households declared themselves homeless These statistics are outrageous. Since the occupation of Writer’s Square 12 weeks ago Occupy Belfast has seen homelessness first hand. We have spoken to them and are disgusted at the problems they face whilst the richest, even in this country, enjoy obscene opulence. The homeless men and women of Belfast have been our biggest supporters from the beginning- and we thank them for this. On Saturday, 14th January at 1pm we will begin our protest at City Hall. This protest will followed by a public general assembly. NO MORE EVICTIONS HOUSING IS A RIGHT NOT A COMMODITY WE ARE THE 99% #OCCUPYBELFAST |
