news report
Thursday March 08, 2012 20:26 by j debender - Rossport Solidarity Camp A field in Aughoose, between Bellinaboy and Pullathomas 085.114.1170
Despite heavy sentencing in Belmullet district court two weeks ago, people continue blocking roads in Mayo At 7.30am on Thursday 8th March, a group of people from the Rossport Solidarity Camp blocked Shell's haulage route between Ballinaboy refinery and Shell's tunneling compound in Aughoose. They set up a concrete lock-on which two people inserted their arms into, making it very difficult for gardaí to remove them. The lock-on was put in place in time to stop the first trucks of the day, and the quiet road was a welcome relief for many locals. In the last month Shell has resumed work on the Glengad compound, which means more haulage along the narrow L1202 road through the villages of Aughoose, Pullathomas and Glengad. Each day starting at 7.30am convoys of lorries trundle through the villages with heavy garda and security escort. Along the route the gardaí stop, detain and in some cases push people off the road to facilitate the advancing convoy.
