Child Benefit Protest for Inchicore

category dublin | miscellaneous | event notice author Sunday November 04, 2012 20:32author by éirígí PRO - éirígí Report this post to the editors

éirígí in Dublin South Central has announced plans to hold a ‘Hands Off Our Child Benefit’ protest on Monday November 5th in Inchicore Village. The protest will take place at 6.30pm outside local Fine Gael TD Catherine Byrne's office.

Speaking from Ballyfermot, éirígí Dublin City Councillor Louise Minihan said, “The Fine Gael/ Labour coalition are considering a proposal to slash Child Benefit by up to €40 in December’s budget. Cuts to Child Benefit are a direct attack on every family in this state and will hit the most vulnerable in our society hardest. Parents must not sit back and allow these cuts to happen. Now is the time to take a stand for our children and fight back!”

éirígí representative for the South Inner City, Damien Farrell, added, “Monday’s protest has been organised to give the people of the South West Inner City, Inchicore, Drimnagh and Ballyfermot the opportunity to take to the streets to oppose Child Benefit cuts. If the government’s anti social policies are allowed to continue, our children are not only going to have their Child Benefit cut – they are also going to be educated in under-funded schools and treated in sub-standard hospitals and when they reach adulthood many will have to choose between dole queue and emigration.

“The anger across this area is palpable and it’s time to bring that anger to the doors of Fine Gael and the Labour Party. For too long government politicians have become rich off the votes of the people of this area but have failed utterly to represent our communities. Our local TDs have a choice to make. They either represent themselves or they represent the people – they cannot do both.”

Councillor Louise Minihan concluded, “All those who are opposed to Child Benefit cuts should come along to the protest and get involved in the fight back against the wider austerity programme. Communities in Dublin South Central and across this state need to get organised and take a meaningful stand against the government’s attacks – we owe that much to our children.”
