Public Talk Public talk & debate – LASC's Research Officer, José Antonio Gutierrez, will discuss the ongoing peace talks in Colombia. This event will take place at the last hour of LASC's annual AGM. It is open to AGM participants and non-participants. On October, the Colombian government and the rebels of the FARC-EP have started formal peace negotiations to be conducted mainly in La Habana, Cuba. This is happening at a time of increased polarization in the positions and increasing escalation of conflict at all levels. Though welcome, these peace negotiations raise a number of important issues to take into account: how far will the establishment go into correcting the injustices that created the conflict in the first place? How other rebel factions will take part in this process? How civil society will participate in them? How will the military take a stand in the face of this peace negotiations? How will the USA play a role in this process? We will address all this issue from the point of view of how we can play a positive and constructive role from Ireland. |
