Dublin Alternative G8

Dear Comrades and Friends

The 2013 G8 Summit is to be held in Fermanagh, Ireland on 17th-18th June.

As in every year in the recent past, anti-globalisation and anti-capitalist activists will gather to demonstrate against this gathering of the leaders of the most powerful countries.

The British government holds the presidency of G8 in 2013. With the arrogance that only an imperialist power could be capable of, the British government has decided to hold the summit in one of its colonies. The hope is that by holding the summit in Fermanagh in Ireland, that activists will be deterred from organising a counter summit within proximity of global leaders. Last year's summit in Chicago had to move location at the last minute because of the real threat of people power disrupting the summit. Large scale protests have accompanied G8 summits in every location they have been held in, with atlernative summits arranged in nearby population centres.

The Dublin Alternative G8 Committee invites all those who wish to protest against this G8 summit and who can travel to Ireland to come to Dublin. In the days leading up to the protest and over the days of the summit itself, there will be a wide range of events happening across Dublin and indeed around Ireland, showing Irish resistance to the imperialist and capitalist agenda.

As Ireland's capital city, Dublin offers the infrastructure to facilitate the arrival and accommodation of the large numbers of activists expected from Britain, other European countries and from across the world. With the influx of international activists a wide range of protests, seminars and other events will be organised, sharing international perspectives and building important links of solidarity. Together we hope to build an Alternative Summit to show that workers can organise across international boundaries and take on the G8.

Fermanagh is only 2 hours travelling time from Dublin by road. Protests will focus on the summit itself and also on the agenda of austerity which is being waged by the EU and IMF in Ireland, and across Europe. Ireland holds the EU presidency at the time of the G8 summmit, with the headquarters of the presidency based in Dublin Castle, which for centuries beforehand was the seat of colonial power in Ireland but which will in June become the focus for sustained demonstrations.

2013 also marks the centenary of the 1913 Dublin Lockout, one of the most significant industrial actions in European history and out of which arose Ireland's army of the working class, the Irish Citizens Army. As well as organising information events about the lockout, International and Irish workers will organise together to recreate the atmosphere of the Lockout and to let the G8, EU and IMF know that they are not welcome in Ireland.

Dublin Alternative G8 is a non-partisan political project. We invite groups across the political spectrum to organise events as part of the counter summit and will help provide support and co-ordination for events. We welcome assistance from any individuals or groups interested in helping with the organisation or with ideas for creative events. In particular we would ask those who can offer accommodation for visiting activists to contact the committee.

We call on as many international groups and activists as possible to participate in the counter summit, or to send delegates or speakers. For those groups intending to travel to Ireland please contact the committee for details of events planned and for any assistance you may require.

A public meeting for those interested will be organised on Wednesday 13th March at 7.30pm at the Pearse Centre, 27 Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

To contact the committee e-mail dublinalternativeg8@gmail.com or phone 085 2310663

Republican Sinn Féin will be holding an Irish Anti-Imperialist Forum as a counter to the G8 Summit in June. The Anti-Imperialist Forum/Republican Alternative to the G8 will take place in Belfast on June 14 and 15. The forum will discuss all aspects of imperialism both in terms of British imperialism in Ireland as well as the new imperialism of the EU, ECB and IMF as experienced by the people of the 26 Counties. Delegates from international anti-imperialist organisations will provide a world perspective.

It is intended as a forum for political and community activists from throughout Ireland and abroad to discuss the various political, social and economic aspects of imperialism from both an Irish as well as an international perspective. Such a debate can be used to chart a way forward towards building an Irish and international alternative to the neo-liberal political and economic policies of the G8 and other trans global imperialist organisations.

We are an autonomous group of activists who have been meeting over the past 6 months to organise a resistance to the G8 summit. We have already put out a call out for a week of action against the G8. We have decided to adopt the PGA hallmarks, and we try to organise non-hierarchically using consensus, respecting the autonomy of groups and individuals involved.

When we heard that the summit would be held near Enniskillen in County Fermanagh we decided to release this statement.

As we are not based in Ireland we do not feel we are able to make a call out for a mobilisation in Ireland. We are continuing to organise a week of action to coincide with the summit and as a part of this there will be a convergence in London. We do not want this to preclude any action at the summit and we would like to support and work with groups that have similar aims and principles to ourselves. We understand that the political focus in Ireland may be elsewhere and want to know if our network can show solidarity with mobilisations against the EU presidency or the G8 summit. We are stronger together and we are all part of the same anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist struggle.

People from Ireland have in the past traveled to the UK whenever there was a G8 summit being held there. There was a big Irish contingent to Scotland when the summit was held in Gleaneagle in 2005, but not as far as I am aware to London . Was there a mobilization in London that year ? It would seem strange for most people from Ireland to go to London when the summit is being held here in Ireland , but I would imagine that some anarchists from Ireland might indeed want to do that .

My view is that some sort of a mobilization should take place all over the world whenever these war criminals and thieves get together -we certainly wouldn't want to see some sort of a nationalistic competition between Irish and UK activists over who gets to oppose the scoundrels and where .There should have been an initiative on this much sooner , but I think that there will be a motion put to the Dublin G8 Alternative meeting Wednesday calling for international activists to come to Dublin . Best wishes for the London event , but please try to get as many people over to Ireland from the UK as possible .

I don't think the english groups are calling people to go to London from Ireland, or that there is any competition between the Irish and British based activists. It seems that in the absence of anything organised in Ireland that the London groups organised something to mobilise those closest to them, which is entirely appropriate.

Now that something concrete is organised in Ireland I would expect that there will be many activists from Britain and from further afield who will flock to Ireland. Of course, there will always be those who cannot travel outside their own country due to resources and practicalities, and its only appropriate that something is organised in London to facilitate London activists. I'd imagine though that there will be a significant section of English activists (and indeed from all over Europe) who will travel to Dublin, just as they have travelled to other G8 summits across Europe.

As far as I know the SWP and related groups will be organising a demo on the day in Fermanagh. Whilst there are pros and cons to this, I recognise the effort that would have to be made to have a demo there which would probably not get near the actual site and so it is futile in many ways and maybe more can be achieved in Dublin but on the other hand the Dublin event is likely to get zero coverage in the mass media and that is after all what we are all trying to impact to one degree or another because without a presence then the media will present this in such a way to say people are no longer protesting and accept the reality of G8 summits or some such crap. The underlying message would be TINA - There is no alternative -ironically what a Dublin summit would be trying to show.

In other words we will be heavily defeated in the propaganda war.

I think that an anti G8 mobilization will get a lot of attention in the mass media , but I don’t think that putting on some sort of a show for that rotten shower should be our aim at all . When the whole point of the mass media is to “heavily defeat” progressive forces in the propaganda war, those progressive forces shouldn’t be playing the corporate media’s game , and they shouldn’t be giving these vultures more delusions of self-importance than they already have in abundance . Actually , as far as I’m concerned the mass media can report us if they want to , but , if they don’t want to then they can go to hell -we should set up our own media for June . Isn’t that what indymedia is supposed to be about?

Don't listen to the people saying we should confine it to Dublin. We need an actual protest at the event. This is what inspires people that others are resisting. If it doesn't get reported, it never happened. Remember the huge protests in the US against the Iraq war that nobody knew about because of the blanket lack of media coverage.

World media will have to cover the G8. They will have to show any visible protests. If there is no protest there, people will lose hope. Dublin protests will not be covered by MSM to any great extent.

Post your video links, stories, audio interview links here then link the material on other corporate sites if you need to.

Nobody is saying it should be confined to Dublin, there will clearly be protests at the summit itself, but in the lead up to the summit, the natural place for activists to converge is Dublin. There's no point in thousands of activists being stuck in a field in Fermanagh for a week, when they could be organising in the main centre of population in Ireland, ie Dublin.

If you look at previous G8 counter demonstrations, there is a long history of the counter summit being organised in a different venue from the actual G8 summit. Since Genoa, which caused so much havoc, the G8 have tended to hold the summit in smaller resort type venues.

The Evian 2003 summit saw the alternative summit based across the border in Switzerland in Geneva, with protests focusing in Geneva, Annemasse and Lausanne.

The counter summit for Gleneagles 2005 was held in Edinburgh, with the largest march taking part the week beforehand as part of the Make Poverty History. A relatively small group made its way to Gleneagles itself and was relatively contained by police.

2007 the summit was in Heligendamm, another resort town. The counter summit and the main protests were in the nearest city, Rostock

2009 the summit was in L'Aquillo. The counter summit was held in Rome, 160km away, with protests then moving to Aquillo itself.

2011 it was in D'eauville, just outside Le Havre. The counter summit and main demonstration was held the weekend before, with relatively little happening at the actual summit.

These are only the Western European summits, there's a similar pattern when it is hosted in North America, Japan and Russia. Last year's summit had to be moved at the last minute from Chicago to the more remote and more easily defended Camp David.

Its clear that there will be protests at the summit itself and the usual attempts to blockade the logistical staff from getting to the venue, but its also clear that the protests that cause most concern and difficulty to the establishment are those that are located in larger cities. These are also the protests that get most coverage. That is precisely why they chose venues outside of urban areas, we do not have to fall into their trap.

This is one of the most ridiculous and ignorant statements I've ever seen made directed at the Gleneagles gathering. The main, and most effective protest groups, were outside of Edinburgh, close to the G8-scum gathering. Seriously, this is a deluded comment from someone who was either at the wrong place (or not there at all), or has been gravely misinformed about the Gleneagles gathering.

Once again, I'm seeing comments like this on indymedia Ireland, I'm running out of patience with this island....

A very useful meeting tonight. Some very heated debate on how the Dublin Counter Summit should proceed, with some very good ideas being brought forward. It was agreed to tie in with events being held in Belfast and Fermanagh, and there was a strong presence of Belfast activists present. Ideas are being considered for a mass demonstration in Dublin during the summit. Invitations will be going out to activists and groups worldwide, and a special committee was established to organize venues and accommodation. The next meeting will be publicized in due course.

Gleneagles is an example of how not to organise an effective protest against the G8. 5,000 protesters in the middle of nowhere and easily contained. Compare that with the protests in Genoa, Seattle, Prague or any other major international protest held in an urban area, and its easy to see which caused more probles for the authorities.

Enda Kenny attended an EU summit in Brussels today . According to RTE News , this morning the focus of the summit would be "......on how best to create economic growth and deliver jobs." Thousands of demonstrators marched in Brussels yesterday and picketed the summit today carrying banners with slogans including "Abolish austerity" and "Education cuts never heal" . They knew that the real purpose of the summit was not job creation .

By this evening , RTE was reporting that the two-day summit had concluded, and that the discussions had “centred on Syria and the question of arming certain opposition groups who are fighting President Bashar al-Assad.” The aim of the G8 summit being held here in June ,according to its organizers, is to "boost cooperation over trade and finance and strengthen the global economy .

PSNI to buy drones ahead of G8

15 MARCH 2013

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is expected to buy two drones for the G8 summit in County Fermanagh in June, it has emerged.

The aircraft can relay live pictures from high quality cameras and are flown by operators remotely.

They could cost around £1 million, it was reported.

World leaders like US President Barack Obama are expected to attend this summer's economic gathering, and a massive security operation is planned at the luxury Lough Erne golf resort which will host the conference.

The PSNI has told the Policing Board it wants to buy the drones for use during the G8 summit and afterwards to combat terrorism and crime, the BBC said.

The Board has to be briefed in advance about any planned purchase or deployment and that briefing will take place next week.

Counter-measures but they might br a bit expensive.

Domestic drones will soon be soaring through the sky left and right, but a company in Oregon with ties to the US military is marketing a service that they say will make sure private property is safe from surveillance. The team at one-month-old Domestic Drone Countermeasures doesn’t go into many specifics, but says they can offer services that will make sure Americans aren’t being spied on by hovering eyes in the sky.

“If there’s going to be private and commercial drones, there will be people who want to safeguard information,” DDC’s Tim Faucett told Portland’s KOIN 6 News last month. “Think about industrial espionage, or companies that don’t want drones around their facilities.”

Faucett is no stranger to working around factories — he also runs a company, Aplus Mobile, that has been recognized for providing “high quality computer and appliances” to defense contractors that deal with drones, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. As recently as November, in fact, Faucett said he was pleased his company’s “technology and workforce dedication continues to provide products that meet or exceed the expectations of our military.” Now as the cousins of those military drones are being prepared for domestic use, Faucett is using his know-how to help make sure anti-drone advocates are safe and sheltered. He doesn’t say how DDC works exactly, but swears it’s a surefire solution.

"Drones will not fall from the sky, but they will be unable to complete their missions,” his new company claims. By selling customers land-based boxes described as "non-offensive, non-combative and not destructive,” DCD says the super-sonic snooping powers of surveillance drones won’t be able to stand up. “These countermeasures are highly effective and undefeatable by most current domestic drone technology,” the company claims.

It's a lovely dystopian future this technology is creating.

In the run-up to the summit it is anticipated that border regions , as well as major cities in the north and south of the country , will be subjected to the sort of lock-down experienced during the 2011 royal visit .

We hope that Irish people will REMEMBER their story and with that start to demand that Irish resourses are controlled by the Irish people, as is done in Norway... So a little visit to Rossport, Derry and the river Shannon will be in store. Thanks to all organising at home, good luck...

We have done it before, we can do it again. Time for Ireland to shake off its slumber and again fight for justice.

President Barrack Obama issued a statement yesterday evening, ahead of next month’s fifteenth anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement in which he said that Northern Ireland still required “urgent work” and faced “more tests to come”.

The issuing of the statement from the US president closely coincided with Wednesday’s discovery of a suspect device in Rosslea , close to the Fermanagh G8 venue. In his statement Obama pledged that he would “reaffirm America’s support for Northern Ireland” during the forthcoming June visit .

Today’s Irish Times quotes the world's leading war criminal saying:
“There are still those few who prefer to look backward rather than forward – who prefer to inspire hate rather than hope. The many who have brought Northern Ireland this far must keep rejecting their call. ”

In a separate speech yesterday US secretary of state John Kerry said that an “unwavering commitment to the rule of law” was necessary for the building of an enduring peace that would unlock the “economic potential of Northern Ireland.”

Yeah right mr warmonger. I see lots of forward thought in US policy in Libya and now Syria.
The only forward thought is "military sales, corporate no bid rebuilding contracts, destruction of any non allied arab infrastructure in countries with oil, steal the oil contracts. Nothing but sectarian hate inspired in every country the US invade, And the only hope inspired is that the US will get out of their countries.

G-Man (short for Government Man) is a slang term for Special agents of the United States Government. It is specifically used as a term for a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent.
According to wikipedia :
"The phrase may have been inspired by its use in Ireland by G Division of seven sections of the Dublin Metropolitan Police. G division was a plainclothes unit that specifically dealt with investigation of subversion and terrorism during the Irish Civil War"

Dublin Alternative G8 Summit 17th and 18th June

Theme of Summit: Resistance to Imperialism

Monday June 17th: Day of Lectures, Seminars, and Anti-imperialist Discussion, with national and international guest speakers. Night of Revolutionary Dance and Song.

Tuesday June 18th: Mass Demonstration in Dublin Center in Commemoration of the 1913 Dublin Lockout and to protest the presence of the world’s most dangerous war criminals holding their G8 summit on Irish soil.

The Dublin Alternative G8 Committee calls on all Progressives, in Ireland and around the Globe, to join us in Dublin on the 17th and 18th of June 2013, for a summit to discuss how we can offer effective resistance to the genocidal policies being pursued by those who call themselves the G8. The New Scramble for Africa has begun. Secular Arab states are being bombed out of existence, to be replaced by the dictatorship of thousands of racist and sectarian gangs (easy for the imperialists to control.) As in 1873, when the Western financial system collapsed, the only answer for the Western powers is imperial conquest. Millions of lives are now in the most grave and immediate danger. Africom is enforcing de facto control over Africa by force of arms, setting one African nation against the other and creating civil wars that will tear the social fabric of Africa to shreds.

The imperialists are organized on a global basis. Within hours, the USA can bomb any point on the earth. Their British and French lapdogs have not been slow to get in on the action – hungry for a share of the colonial loot. Countries like Ireland, that pretend to be neutral, have shown their greed and envy by surreptitiously joining in the occupation of Afghanistan and offering to send troops to join in the re-conquest of Africa.

We anti-imperialists must also organize on a world-wide basis. The Dublin Alternative G8 Summit offers an ideal opportunity to galvanize what has already been achieved, and set out ambitious plans to stop imperialism in its tracks. As a country under imperial occupation and partitioned by the sectarian and ethnic division vital to all imperialist conquest, Ireland is a very suitable place for this debate to take place.

By holding the G8 Summit in occupied Ireland, the imperial powers have thrown down the gauntlet to all anti-imperialists world-wide. Do we have the courage to pick it up? The imperialists will get their answer soon enough.

To add insult to injury, the imperialists have chosen the centenary of the 1913 Dublin Lockout to hold their carnival of reaction in Ireland. The Dublin Alternative G8 Summit will be the center piece of the commemoration of that noble event, when tens of thousands of Working Class people suffered months of starvation rather than bend their knee to the power of the Irish comprador class, which was led by William Martin Murphy, owner of the infamous Irish Independent newpaper (liespaper in fact.) Hundreds of thousands marched on the streets in support of the strikers – defying police thugs who attempted to baton them off the streets.

Hopefully, a hundred years later, the people of Dublin will remember the courage of 1913 and prove themselves as worthy as those who went before them.

Of course I was speaking figuratively above. Needless to say, there will be many red and black banners and flags to commemorate the 1913 Lockout on the 18th, and I have no doubt we will have Anarchists taking part in the the full range of events over the 17th and the 18th in Dublin.

Why have the anarchists chosen to go to London?

The summit is in Fermanagh, and there is a protest being organised in Dublin.

We should be encouraging people to come here and support our efforts, rather than the other way around.

London will have its own protest regardless, the presence of 50-100 Irish anarchists wouldnt make a big difference on a London demo, but it would make a big impact on a Dublin demo.

According to UK anarchist websites , London has been chosen because it represents the "heart of world capitalism". Seeing as world capitalism's collective arsehole will be seated in Fermanagh in June I would have thought it be better to get people to come over to Ireland .. But best wishes to those anarchists traveling over to the UK all the same.

People need to start looking at what position Ireland will be in ,come June, as a result of the rapidly unfolding crisis of the international economic system. The world has been sold a load of junk bonds , and national governments are competing for who owns the real capital behind the piles of debt - like bailiffs representing competing junk loan companies . Armed security guards from the UK are currently standing outside banks in Cyprus . At the same time , Germany’s leading financial publication Handelsblatt , says that the Cyprus bail-out deal puts the German-controlled ECB in control of the island’s economy, and that : ‘“Cypriot citizens would “receive the necessary funds to live.”’ http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2013/03/23/cypr-m23.html

This could very well be the situation here by the time G8 arrives . Over the weekend newspapers reported that Enda Kenny had “brushed aside” the suggestion of a food ration of five euros a day that had been drafted by the Personal Insolvency Service under insolvency rules created by the Coalition . Kenny was probably right to brush aside these guidelines , because they are certainly not going to be stringent enough for whoever is going to be in control of Ireland over the coming period .
