LGBT Protest At Russian Embassy.

category international | gender and sexuality | press release author Tuesday July 16, 2013 14:23author by NGLF Report this post to the editors

Today, Tuesday 16th July, at 5:00pm, a coalition of LGBT organizations, civil-society groups, political parties and public representatives will hand in a protest letter to the Russian Embassy, Orwell road, Rathgar to register our horror at the signing into law of the “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relationships” Bill (the so-called Gay 'Propaganda' law)

For further comment, please contact:
Adam Long, NLGF - National Lesbian and Gay Federation - at adamlong80@gmail.com
Max Krzyzanowski, spokesperson for LGBT Noise on 086 8387471

We the undersigned condemn in the strongest possible terms the recent passage of a law banning the “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relationships”, which amounts to a serious assault on the basic rights and freedoms of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) citizens in Russia and on freedom of expression more generally.

The justification offered for the adoption of this draconian legislation - the protection of minors from learning about homosexuality - is extremely misguided and seems to be based on the utterly discredited notion that homosexuality is something that can be 'taught' or 'recruited' into, when in fact sexual orientation is an innate and immutable personal characteristic. The law is also a major breach of the rights of Russian LGBT youth, who will be prevented from accessing crucially important information relating to their sexuality.

Furthermore, the legislation is so loosely defined as to effectively prohibit any public campaigning for LGBT rights or the depiction of LGBT lives in a positive or even neutral light. It is an unacceptable attack on freedom of expression and has been widely condemned by, among others, The Council of Europe, the European Parliament, the UN Human Rights Committee, numerous NGO's and foreign governments.
The European Court of Human Rights and the UN Human Rights Committee have made clear in previous rulings that the right to freedom of expression encompasses the right to freely express one’s sexual orientation or gender identity, as well as the freedom to seek, receive and impart information on issues related to sexual orientation or gender identity. These judgments have very recently been affirmed in the 18 June 2013 opinion of the Venice Commission, which considered that bans on so-called “homosexual propaganda” are “incompatible with the ECHR and international human rights standards.”

The anti-gay legislation is in direct conflict with Russia's clear human rights obligations and has only succeeded in fueling homophobic prejudice and violence in the country. Therefore we strongly urge the Russian authorities to end the arrests and persecution of LGBT people and to instead focus on upholding their rights and that of their supporters to freedom of expression, assembly and protection from homophobic violence.

It seems russia has a long way to go with regards to homophobia and lesbian-o-phobia.

Notice how it's always russia, not the likes of Saudi Arabia that get targetted with the likes of pussy riot or LGBT protests etc.

Yes, they are a macho society with some way to go in the direction of proper treatment of LGBT rights. However our "allies" in Saudi Arabia hang people for being gay. Let's deal with the more pressing (and possibly fatal) lack of gay rights in these "ally" countries before dealing with russian intolerance.

The folks behind posting such articles all the time, all over the internet only care about creating bad PR to undermine russia on the world stage. It's easy for them to stir up "useful idiots" to fill the internet and airwaves of tales of evil russia being nasty to pussy riot or gay folks. However I doubt if they care much about anyone's rights except the rights of the elites, whose only concerns are corporate / political profits from russia's weakening / demise

People hate LGBT folk just as much in large parts of the US. Let's protest their embassy too.

this picture is from the US not Russia!

The NLGF has fought for LGBTQ rights since 1979 both in Ireland and abroad. Russia has just passed homophobic legislation and you attack us instead of the Russian State. You should oppose the Russian laws and call for them to be repealed

NLGF is an Internationalist organisation. Its not always Russia, see below.

76 countries still criminalise consensual same-sex relationships and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people everywhere continue to suffer violent attacks and discriminatory treatment.

In this simple, high-impact video from the UN human rights office, individuals from diverse backgrounds pose questions directly to the viewer designed to expose the nature of human rights violations suffered by LGBT people around the world.

The UN's message: LGBT rights are human rights. Together we will build a world that is free and equal.

The same discredited and in many cases downright offensive arguments made against allowing gay couples marry were also used to oppose blacks and whites marrying. Interesting to learn then that in the late 1960s, when the US Supreme Court struck down archaic state bans on inter-racial marriage, the US public were strongly opposed to such unions by a hefty 73-20% margin. And only 10 years previously, just 4% approved! No one today, except the most avowedly racist, would express such views.

By comparison, support among Americans for marriage equality - the right of gay couples to marriage on the same terms as everyone else - has been consistently above 50% for some time now. And that is even before the US Supreme Court has weighed in on the issue.

Both in the US and elsewhere, it is long past time the politicians and the law caught up with society on this issue.

Famous Lithuanian faces tell the homophobes in their country: "If you wanted to stay in the Middle Ages, you shouldn't have joined the EU."

The EU is not just an economic union. It also must be vocal in its social values and commitment to non-discrimination, not least where LGBT rights are concerned. And insist every member State adheres to this.

Congratulations to the New Zealand parliament for voting to legalise same-sex marriage, country after the country in the developed world is now endorsing marriage equality. Each extra state which legalises same-sex marriage will strengthen the campaign of the 'Yes' side when Ireland holds its referendum in 2014.

All the countries criticized also happen to have leaders who are opponents of the UK government’s foreign policy, but this doesn’t mean that there isn't discrimination against gays in those countries. The trouble is that genuine gay activists in such countries can get confused for being supporters of the Peter Tatchell , British commonwealth type of roving “human rights” activist .
African gay activists warned in 2007 on the political role being played on the African continent by old colonial brigade gays : "We do not appreciate or accept the efforts of Western-based individuals or organisations who try to make our work for liberation into an ego-boosting publicity campaign for themselves." I'm sure that there must be genuine Russian gay groups who would recognize that Western intelligence agencies are promoting the issue of gay rights as a handy way of propagandizing the benefits of "western democracy" to the people of Russia .If the NLGF were to clearly disassociate itself from the likes of Outrage! it might perhaps be helpful .

Here's a link to the African LGBTI article
African LGBTI Human Rights Defenders Warn Public against Participation in Campaigns Concerning LGBTI Issues in Africa Led by Peter Tatchell and Outrage!
PUBLIC STATEMENT OF WARNING

In order to prevent Peter Tatchell and Outrage! from causing further damage through their unfounded campaigns and press releases, we issue this public statement of warning.

As Human Rights Defenders from across Africa, we strongly discourage the public from taking part in any LGBTI campaigns or calls to action concerning Africa that are led by Peter Tatchell or Outrage!

"Collaboration across continents is both important and valuable. We are willing to work with those who respect our advice and expertise regarding our continent.

"However, Outrage! has been acting in contempt and disregard of the wishes and lives of African Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTI) Human Rights Defenders. We have made every attempt to address this matter with Outrage!, personally, and they have refused to listen. We now take this matter to the public, requesting you not to take part in any of Peter Tatchell or Outrage!'s campaigns regarding Africa, as they are not factually-based and are harmful to African activists."

Peter Tatchell is not a member of the NLGF. People coming from the outside can often cause harm unless they are clued in. The NLGF was glad to welcome a Ugandan woman who knows what is going on in her country. She lives there and is active there.

The protest took place at the Russian Embassy because Russia recently adopted homophobic laws.
