First Film: 2:30 p.m. - Solar Mamas

Solar Mamas tells the story of Rafea, a Jordanian Bedouin mother who is given the opportunity to study in the Barefoot College in India and become a solar engineer, capable of bringing power to her village. She attends the course, which brings together twenty-seven women from all over the world. All from poor backgrounds, they are mothers and grandmothers and mostly illiterate. The film also examines the tension between Rafea and her husband, who wants her home and threatens to take everything away from her unless she returns.

Second Film: 4 p.m. - Line in the Sand

Line in the Sand is an independent documentary about the conflict surrounding the construction of the Northern Gateway pipeline, particularly environmental concerns. The construction of this pipeline has become a controversial issue: advocates argue that it will create more jobs and provide a source of domestic energy, but activists are worried about the pipeline’s environmental and health risks. The film records the opinions and personal stories of Canadians directly affected. Some are worried about effects to water sources on the land, while others want to protect Native grounds.

Admission free. (Donations welcome.)
