MSF Event: Kunduz hospital attack – What has been lost

category dublin | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Tuesday June 14, 2016 09:40author by msf

Dr Kathleen Thomas was working at Médecins Sans Frontières' emergency trauma hospital in Afghanistan, when a series of devastating airstrikes struck the hospital - killing 42 staff, patients and their caretakers. The majority of the hospital was completely destroyed, with just one young patient surviving the attack on the intensive care unit.

The only facility of its kind in north-eastern Afghanistan, the Kunduz trauma centre provided high-quality and free surgical care to patients suffering from general trauma as well as to those with conflict-related injuries. The staff saw over 100 patients per day and since opening in 2011, more than 15,000 surgeries were conducted and more than 68,000 people were treated there.

Read Kathleen's powerful eye-witness account in The Guardian and watch the ABC Documentary - 'Surgical Strike'.
