Rishi Sunak has once again been dropping hints about leaving the European Convention on Human Rights. This is not credible, says Dr David McGrogan: such a feat would require a Government far more serious than this one.

The great Scottish Enlightenment philosopher David Hume would have some things to teach today's woke activists, says Prof James Allan: about a mind-independent reality that has no truck with claims of 'my truth'.

It's been a wet winter and this is bad news for farmers, says Ben Pile. But with agricultural yields increasing sharply over recent decades, there's no reason to link it to climate change or start catostrophising about it.

AID TO SYRIA – AGAINST ALL ODDS

When global authorities to include the UN insisted that it was impossible due to dangerous conditions and sanctions, to deliver aid to the people of war torn Syria, a group of courageous people from Switzerland achieved the “impossible”. Eva and Markus Heizmann and friends travelled to Syria on 3 occasions to deliver vital goods to people in devastated villages and towns across Syria. They delivered 6 ship containers in all to Syria.

For decades we have been dealing theoretically and practically with the subject of colonialism, imperialism and the struggle against these phenomena.

Therefore it is not surprising that we never assumed that Syria was or ever has been in a civil war. Nevertheless and against all facts they still talk in the mainstream media of a ?civil war? in Syria. So that?s not true.

Syria, the Syrian people, suffer under attacks coming from abroad.

Thanks to our comrades in Vienna we came in touch with a priest from the Melkit Church in Syria. Even though this priest lives in Austria he has, as a Syrian, a strong connection to Syria. He organized transports for charity goods to the people in need in Syria. Those were the days when the war against the Arabic Republic was at its peak. We are talking about the years 2013 to 2015.

As a result of our meetings with this Melkite priest we asked the local priest in our hometown in Switzerland if he could send some money to those who do that kind of work. It turned out that the Catholic community of our village decided to send, in their own right, a ship container filled with charity goods, of such a kind as clothes, winter clothes in particular, shoes, tools and so on. We had a list of items that were needed in Syria. On another list were the prohibited items such as medical drugs, liquids, food and other vital goods. The group which organized the project got a lot of solidarity, far beyond the village. In the end we?ve sent not only one ship container but six of them to Syria.

Nuns and monks from the monastery of Mar Yakoub, located in the hills between Damascus and Homs, took responsibility for the distribution of these goods. This is how we came in touch with the Melkite community there with Abbot Father Daniel, and Mother Superior Agnes. Some of you might have heard of them.
