More than 90,299 have fled into exile, mostly to Costa Rica, although some have arrived here in Ireland and are seeking asylum.

The Nicaraguan Centre for Human Rights (CENIDH) was at the forefront of the defence of human rights, collecting thousands of testimonies of the atrocities – arrests, assassinations, harassment etc. In December 2018 it was forcibly closed down and many of its members had to go into exile. A group of them established The Human Rights Collective “Nicaragua: Never Again” in Costa Rica.

Two members of the Collective, Juan Carlos Arce and Martha María Blandon will be visiting Europe to attend the UN Human Rights Council session on Nicaragua in Geneva, starting on 24th February 2020. Juan Carlos is a well-known human rights lawyer while Martha Maria is a long-standing feminist and defender of women’s rights. Following their visit to Geneva, they will be visiting several European countries, including Ireland. This meeting will be an excellent opportunity to hear their account of events in Nicaragua, as well as their personal stories. Sheila Nunan, former President of ICTU (Irish Congress of Trade Unions) will be joining us as chairperson.

Special Appeal: FUNDING NEEDED URGENTLY

The Collective has had to borrow funds for this tour. Some members of LASC have set up a fundraiser to contribute towards covering the costs of the trip. Can you chip in? You can do this by logging in to: paypal.me/pools/c/8mKACsOR5c or if you are coming to the meeting, you can give something on the night. This is a one-off and very specific request, but this tour is vital if Nicaragua is going to remain as a priority on the agenda of the UN Human Rights Council. Please give what you can.

For further information, log on with the words Nicaragua Nunca Mas, and you will find some videos of their work and other information on the Collective.
