CAWC calls for support for Mary Kelly

category national | anti-war / imperialism | press release author Monday June 30, 2003 19:27author by Cork Anti-War Campaignauthor email corkantiwar at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

PRESS RELEASE 30/06/03

CORK ANTI-WAR CAMPAIGN CALLS FOR SUPPORT FOR MARY KELLY

Mary Kelly, the well-known anti-war activist, went on trial at Kilrush Courthouse in County Clare today (Monday, 30 June 2003) for her courageous attack on a U.S. warplane at Shannon airport. The Cork Anti-War Campaign (CAWC) is calling on people to actively support Ms Kelly over the coming days. The trial is expected to last five days and witnesses for Ms Kelly will include Scott Ritter, Ramsey Clarke, and Denis Halliday. There will be a daily support picket outside the courthouse, beginning at 9.30am each morning of the trial.

Commenting on the case, Dr Fintan Lane of CAWC said: “Mary Kelly’s action in attacking a U.S. warplane at Shannon was a brave and principled protest against the undermining of Irish neutrality. Her decommissioning of that plane was no different to laying a sub-machine gun on the ground and hitting it with a sledgehammer. Her intention was to save lives in Iraq – it was an act of compassion and resistance.”

He concluded: “It is an outrage that Shannon airport is still shamed by the presence of U.S. warplanes.”

You got to move out of the nostalgia ("a mild form of depression" abbie hoffman, and he should know) of yesterday and the anticipation of the 'morrow and be here now baby, TODAY. Mary Kelly is on trial today and kicking ass! A shot of existentialism wouldn't go astray, dude.

Please send my kindest wishes to Mary Kelly if you see her over the next few days! I've been telling others at the volunteer camp here in central Turkey about it, and they all support her (International group, including UKs and USs too).

This is Mary's trial, sure, but she's putting the war on trial.

Celebrate hope! Resist War! Don't sit on the fence (cut it)! ;-)

If we don't show solidarity with yesterdays protesters, fewer people will have the guts to be tomorrows protesters. I consider the 60 plus people who were arrested over the course of the anti-war protests to have been arrested on my behalf and on behalf of all those who supported their actions. They are taking the rap when it could have been any of us who was picked off on a given day. Put yourself in their position; it's extremely unpleasant to be forced to stand before the court on numerous dates not of your chosing with the prospect of hefty fines, being banned from County Clare for two years or being imprisoned for several years in the cases of some of the defendants. Show a bit of support if you agree with their actions.

what is the point in holding these vigils?... she is yesterday's protestor... we should be worrying about the issues of tomorrow...
