One person in five speaks the Irish language on a daily basis according to new statistics released from the Irish Central Statistics Office. Three quarters of the speakers are at school. 66.6% of the people surveyed said they had the ability to speak Irish but rarely spoke the language. They said that if they spoke it they would only use it on a weekly basis. The Gaeltacht areas as a whole took a fall. It was plain to see from the figures released that the number of speakers in Gaeltacht areas had fallen dramatically since the last Census was carried out in 1996. In 1996 60% of Irish speakers in the Gaeltacht areas spoke Irish daily, in 2002 this number fell to 56%. |
