Two held after terror gun seizure

TWO men were arrested yesterday in England following a major investigation into terrorist guns believed to be destined for Limerick.

Gardai, West Yorkshire Police, Lancashire Police, the Metropolitan Police and security services had joined forces in the cross-border operation. The men were arrested yesterday afternoon after a search of a commercial premises in Morecambe, Lancashire.

Gardai said three firearms were recovered - two handguns and a rifle - and that the guns were linked to criminal activity in Limerick and the activities of Dissident Republicans and the Continuity IRA.

An inspector with Lancashire police added: "We believe the weapons were not for use in Britain."

The inspector was not able to give the whereabouts of the arrested men last night, but confirmed they had two men in custody who had not yet been charged with an offence.

In March, two machine guns destined for use in the vicious gang warfare in Limerick city were seized by gardai following a wide-scale security operation. The guns had been smuggled into the country from Britain by the Continuity IRA in conjunction with one of the feuding gangs.
