Robert Emmett to be commemorated in Dublin by true Republicans

John Horan speaks out

Robert Emmett to be commemorated in Dublin

John Horan, Dublin Republican Sinn Féin
August 26, 2003
With plans by RTÉ to screen a 'Mint Production' documentary on Robert Emmet on the anniversary of his execution (ie September 20th) people may be interested to know that a commemoration to mark the 200th Anniversary of the execution of Robert Emmet will be held in Dublin on Saturday, September 20th next; the procession will assemble at the Garden of Remembrance in Parnell Square at 1.30 pm and march to St Catherines Church in Thomas Street, where those present will be addressed by author Seán Ó Brádaigh.

Seán Ó Brádaigh, coincidentally, was mentioned by Martin Mansergh, in his article 'Why militant republicanism has reached a dead end.' (Sunday Business Post, August 24th)

Mr Mansergh wrote - "Whenever elements of Irish republicanism takes on Irish democracy . . . democracy will win"; Irish republicanism is fighting FOR Irish democracy, Mr Mansergh, not AGAINST it! However, your mistake is understandable - for you and others in the establishment , Martin , so-called "Irish democracy" ends this side of the British-imposed border. Mr Mansergh wrote that - "The people of the Republic . . . will not be willing to put it (their "huge investment in peace") at risk for any project of unity that has not been legitimately and constitutionally brought about ." : too late , Sir - sure is'nt Leinster House there already!

And finally - Martin Mansergh congratulated The Sunday Business Post for being "a forum in which the best ways forward for an Irish republicanism with legitimate constitutional aims can be freely discussed." Sometimes, those of us who are legitimate non-constitutional Irish Republicans can get a word in as well!

Slan anois, Martin - hope to see you in the crowd on September 20th . . .
