infowar.gif Globalisation And The Media, the award winning Undercurrents documentary will be screened in DIT (Dublin Institute of Technology) School of Architecture on Bolton St. next Thursday @ 6.00 16th Oct 2003.

Globalisation And The Media, an award winning documentary explores how the United States has spend the last fifty years constructing the present New World Order. Aided by its powerful military resources, alongside the IMF, World Bank and the World Trade Organisation, the rules of global trade have been largely imposed to serve its own interests. Globalisation and The Media explores the role of the media in this corporate led takeover of global resources.

what happens when a so called conspiracy becomes fact?

this film shows and proves each case and inspires us in the indymedia movement on how important it is to have independent non corporte media

this is a very powerful film and it is essential that as many people as possible view it.

the event will be in room 281, followed by a chat in college and possibly a pint in the kings inn pub after.

the original post for this screening was at
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=6157
this was as a result of some frustration on my part-that indymedia could be more effective and do more. it is not just a website. it should be open and as inclussive as possible allowing for people to add their energy, enthusiasm and most importantly IDEAS.

i proposed the event as an indymedia public event, this has not been stated above but i think it is essential that these type of things happen, so the many 100`s or 1000`s of studnets here who perhaps are unaware of indymedia, find out about it and maybe add their input

i put a post up some weeks back about this; development of indymedia
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=61275

i was involved with setting up the oxford indymedia node, we worked with undercurrents who made the film (glob and media) and our idea was to make imc-oxford a physical thing as well as the virtual thing that it is, these would both further enhance each other
ie- put on a screening and workshop in one part of town and give people the skills to start making their own news-

i asked people in the EASA network whether they wanted a copy of the film, so far one guy from the netherlands wants a copy to show there
http://easa.antville.org/stories/542831

so come down on thursday to bolton st. watch the film and hopefully we will have an an inspirational chat after.

and maybe a pint

The real conspiracy that we must fear is that Islamic extremist terrorists in the Middle East and the Marxist fanatics in Europe and America form an alliance to commit acts of terror against Jews, Africans, Hindus, Catholics, Buddhists, Chinese, Americans, British, French, Italians, Russians, Chechen, Turkish, Kuwaitis, Iraqis, Indonesians, Colombians etc. etc....
They'll also bomb Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Monsanto, Sellafield, Levi's, Rebook, Universal Studies, Warners Bros, Microsoft, Heinz, McDonald's. Burger King, Easons, Kinder etc. etc......
The threat is not from liberal capitalist democracy which has brought about an explosion of wealth prosperity and happpiness through out the entire world but the miserable defeatist ignorant and moronic wreckers such as Islamic terrorists and Marxist loons.

i have to clarify what is meant by "node" and "nodal", I'm sorry chum, (sincerely) but the Oxford imc is not a node, a node is any point on a vibrating string which has harmonic properties and is not affected by the vibrationary rate on either side. The phenomona of "nodal" existence was first formulated by Pythagoras, it is used by many theorists to describe certain emergent phenomona especially in relation to cyber culture and social movements. The english word "node" sounds very similar to the spanish word "nodo" which can be intepreted as "knot" or "node". The first collectives to use "node" as a point of reference were simulataneously: NYC, UK and BCN based groups. IMC oxford may be harmonic, it may be a "knot" but thus far we have seen no evidence that it is truly "nodal". This might seem silly and academic, but rather it is very serious, this year many independent and autonomous media activists have had opportunity to meet and discuss and reflect on many "observed effects" of the "music", and the terminology of "nodal theory" came up for a lot of discussion, the conclusions we came to are: "there are nodes, but they might not be where we presumed to place them, and this is actually a _good thing_, in that it acts to the defence of the whole system".

now that two pence worth done:

GO TO THIS MEETING.
WATCH THIS VIDEO.
BE NICE TO DUNK.
BECOME THE MEDIA.
{& leave the poor nodes alone, they suffer enough intrusive interest as it is}

thanks for that, ill need to learn more. see you thr
im studying architecture and we use the word, perhaps in the wrong way, but its used anyway in urban terms as points where lots of stuff is going on. im sure theres a better description of this- its interesting to see how both the real and virtual work with each other, creating nodes in the physical by the virtual moving around to diff physical ones.
ie- IMC public events in various colleges, venues, libraries etc

its all good

when Scroop the Cambridge Architects graduate magazine asked me to write for them on Reclaim The Streets! I told them they weren't "nodal" enough, and I then learnt about "architecture nodes".
(= We learn from each other)

Send me the tape some time to Bçn.
& good luck with it / enjoy everyone being nice to you.

last night went very well.
thanks to all who came along, hopefully its only the start of a lot of exciting positive interactive events around the city that will get more people aware of stuff and doing something positive to improve things

@ 18 people came along, mostly indymedia people. there was only 3 architects. sad when you think that there are @ 500 students in the ASA (ark student association)- perhaps they dont give a shit?

anyway, people arrived. a music video by - seize the day - was shown, which featured non violent direct action carried out on bombers going out to kill innocent people in east timor
this was followed by a few words from the famous philosopher noam chomsky about oil dependancy leading to more global terrorism. he states that the US is the biggest terrorist in the world today.

short FUSPEY film could not be shown, but can be seen from here
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=61716
there were 2 or 3? people from indymedia ireland group, keiran gave a good intro to what it was about and the upcoming irish social forum in ucd this weekend

then "globalisation and the media" some people were familiar with the content, some had never heard about this stuff.

this was followed by an informal chat in the college. publicity and outreach of indymedia was explored. there were multi media, photography, art and design, arts students from dcu, dit bolton st and temple baar, maynooth.
a possible indymedia exhibition is one idea, maybe in the ilac library. this would be accompanied by an open public screening and talk given by indymedia.
an example of this was the "INDYMEDIA stuff exhibited in Bosnia state art gallery" done as part of an eco city project done by FUSPEY
http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/oxford/2003/06/273494.html

creative systems to get more people aware of imc and using it were looked at.
showing the international indymedia newsreal regularly, posting the indymedia printed newspapers around town, cafes, internet cafes, colleges, laundrettes....
http://images.indymedia.org/imc/print/imcprint2002-2.pdf
thats from
http://print.indymedia.org/

we also played with the idea of doing stuff in public spaces-
media is what this is about so- in a few weekends time we will do a news at one o clock from moore street. this will be a short event- small indymedia flyers will be given out, imc newspapers will be on show.
both global and local issues will be dealt with
- internation car free day dublin terrible
- WTO talks crash in cancun
- world bank bonds boycott
- news from palestine
- architectural students dont care about global issues
- bin taxs in dublin
- growing racism in ireland
- neutrality breached
- dundalk college builds wind turbine to power entire college
- ucd bans coca cola from SU.
etc

so that was the rough gist of it.
lots of enthuasism, ideas,
give us a shout if you want to get involved

thanks to all who participated, i think things are going to get a lot more exciting

you can find out more about FUSPEY stuff at
