Irish Social Forum Summit to take place in Dublin

public consultation / irish social forum |
feature
Thursday October 16, 2003 13:19 by Indymedia Ireland Editorial Group - Indymedia Ireland
Summit theme is Co-Operation and Solidarity After a long period of preparation conducted in a refreshingly open and transparent manner, a diverse range of up to 40 citizens groups, organisations and NGOs are preparing to meet in Dublin for the Irish Social Forum Summit of Co-Operation and Solidarity. The Irish Social Forum is affiliated to the World Social Forum, a Civil Society initiative which developed in opposition to the World Economic Forum. The WSF meets each year at the same time as the WEF and poses an increseangly coherent civil society alternative to the neoliberal economic agenda which holds sway in Davos. The Co-operation and Solidatity summit was planned as an Irish civil society response to a WEF summit on the theme of Competition, which had been planned to take place in Dublin this October, but which was subsequently cancelled. The Irish Social Forum website has full details of workshops and plenary sessions which are taking place from 17th - 19th October in and around UCD. UCD coincidentally had a recent eventful visit from a leading Irish cheearleader for the WEF economic agenda - Mary Harney. - Full ISF Programme - Indymedia interview with ISF activist |

DIT bolton st, could be a venue for mid april meeting, is it ISF2 or dublin social forum?
i see cork are having a CSF soon
just like if we were kept in touch
a few things ive thought of for upcoming event:
can you send me any stuff you have re what isf is, brief hist of, hoped outcomes, stuff required -eg rooms, how many sizes. do you want the canteen open or the shop, will you use the open area, who will be coming, how many, what times to you want the college used, do you want the library open with access to internet and computers, do you want computer labs open, for internet use
can you think of other things?
now that christmas is over, will things be recomencing?
is there a meeting/ event of sorts @ may ?
is there feedback from the world social forum, and the brainstorm on how to progress?
hope so
is the feedback of our own ISF compiled yet?
can things be improved, definately
see you soon
social forum and indymedia are the 2 open, non hierarchial processes which are changing the world in a fundamentally new way.
while the "world economic forum" met in switzerland to decide what way they want the world to develop in 2000, civil society decided to meet up and discuss a "social" vision for the world
25,000 people came together in porto allegre in brazil for the first "world social forum"
2 years later 60,000 came together for the second one
last october the "world economic forum" came for a meeting in dublin, in response to this we had the first "irish social forum"
the world social forum is happening in january in mumbai in india.
it is the - network age- things are changing
it is possible for the 150 or so already existing indymedia nodes to work on a global project together, whereby live webstreams can be set up so that those of us who want to go to mumbai but physically cant, can still participate in the process;
using the real and the virtual together. when we start doing this, we will really start seeing change
here is a recorded clip from the cd "the irish social forum", put together by comhlamh
if you want a copy or more info contact ian (isf outreach) ian@theplateau.com or ring 4914970, or see http://www.comhlamh.org/index.php?article_id=105§ion_id=22
(unfortunately, i cant upload the file, i will get it up ASAP- http://www.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=368399&group=webcast did not take the file format?)
the term "anti globalisation" is not a correct term- some argue globalisation is a natural process of evolution. in france those working for a fairer world are called
"autremondialists"?
another world IS possible
its happening too.
another world is possible
I unfortunatly missed out on the october forum but really thought it was a great idea. It doesn't seem like it was hugely successful from the amount of feedback thats appeared, but maybe now that the word is out, and people know what to expect a better attempt can be made later next year. The aftermath is as important as the event after all, and this time it really seems the most was not done to promote and encourage future attempts. Contact needs to be made in colleges, workplaces, every possible place around Dublin and Ireland with individuals who are willing to promote and spread the word of the ISF. I look forward to hearing more about the next event soon!!!
After the Dublin WEF was called off most of the ISF organisers wanted to call off the Sunday march.
The SWP/GR argued strongly against this claiming that tens of thousands would march.
It is hard to tell from the photo as maybe lots of people are to one side but did tens of thousands turn up?
image 1- the closing plenary in mothre redcaps. @ 100 participated?
due to lack of numbers and possibly having to pay 3 grand, the carnival that was planned for sunday after the closing pleneary did not happen
instead speakers spoke in the cold about issues
standing addressing the small enough crowd is keiran from cathoic worker, who with 4 others is still in court after direct action in shannon

perhaps there will another ISF @ april/ may,
maybe dublin??
requests have gone out to all to send back feedback, not sure how much has come back
more images should be online in a week or 2
things can be improved
images from irish social forum
a request is being sent out from the ISF team to all 27 workshops and to those that chaired the pleneary sessions to send back a report, min 60 words, within 2 weeeks so that a comprehensive feedback report can be compiled
a request is also being sent out to these groups to be aware of (if not already so)and to use indymedia as the main communication space of the growing netork which got together during the social forum
communication is the key
presenting the ideas, news, developments both local and global to ever wider audiences will hopefully get more invovled
how,
because it is exciting
an exhibition and festival is being created for @ may @ moore street. the world coming to ireland
the following is email sent to contact on the ISF website
hi barry
duncan crowley here
i am interested in further keeping things going with ISF or at least communicating the info from diff groups.
there was a very disapointing amount of feedback from the isf and groups there on indymedia.
i am trying to work with this group, as i think the fine resourse that it can be is not what it is today.
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=61275
is how id like to see it progress
anyway im working with comhlamh trade group and i have asked them for a feedback summary from their workshops, to be posted on indymedia. im proposing that a request goes out to all 27 workshops asking for them to do a similar task, and a summary from the plenarys
also a report back from the isf cordinators would help
thanks for getting it together, i think it is a very positive start
all the best
dunk
by filling in the gaps
The ISF occured, lots of eager and nice people met up and had a long shindig chat chat.
quick comment on isf
by pc Thursday, Oct 23 2003, 3:15pm
the isf after the wef was cancelled ended up being much smaller then anticipated and ill admit it didn't achieve its wish of spread politics out to the joe soaps of this world but it did get a lot of people the usual suspects and a few others in the rooms together which doesn't happen that often and was a great sucess in that sense,
linking our view of neo-libralism with peoples every day problems with getting resources and things done for people rather then profit still hasn't been achieved and is a very difficult problem .... i didn't figure out how to that while sorta helping out with the isf...
I missed out on it as well Dunk but have heard very positive things back from people I know who were at it.
And I am right with ya indeed. The social forums, like Indymedia, that are sprouting up around the world in a very rapid fashion offer great hope for the world I reckon. Exciting times indeed.
There is an infinite number of forces out there opposing capitalism & neo-liberalism, but to date they have been too disparate. I think a world wide & local uniting under some broad format is the only way of defeating the extreme might of capitalism and saving humanity from our brutal primordial origin and ways.
I unfortunatly missed out on the conference at the weekend, but would love to hear how people felt it went. Are there any whispers from the organisers to do something similar in the near future? I hope so....
the ISF irish social forum happened last weekend
and it rocked
it is only the start of things, little by little.
thanks to all involved for making it happen
the workings of the world are beginning to change in a very positive way. its very exciting.
what is peoples feedback from the ISF, how do you think it went, how can things be improved, what was the best thing to come from it for you, tell us how you felt it went
there has been some posts already about the weekend, things are already coming from it.

i think there was a nun at the direct action workshop
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=61765
sorry to disapoint you phuq head
im me
dunk, in virtual world as in real world
were you aware of screening last week, there will be more
im getting summary of isf together at the moment
the gist was this
200+ people came together- 4 main topics explored, 27 smaller issues looked at in workshops in rooms of diff sizes
i went to trade issues talk with comhlamh and oxfam, v informative but more importantly- wide spectrum of diff indivs and people from different groups met each other, young old, hardcore activist-newcomers who care, all shared ideas. lots of good energy in the room,
good to hear there is things you can do. ie world bank bonds boycott, and oxfam make trade fair big noise is effective
film making at margins, workshop 2, got film makers, tek heads, activists, lots of other sorts together. a v free flowing discussion emerged.
making the films is great, we need to make more spaces to show them, and get more people seeing them, thats what im working at.

direct action workshop
http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=61765
had a nun in it
good chat, had to run, not sure how it ended, what came from it. i found it good
micheal albert? US thinker/ activist of high regard talked about
"fighting the good fight"
doing things because its good, not really believing you are going to actually change things
bolix to that
look at the problem, see why things are not working, create improved techniques, go at it again
so do the action, but also publicity events around it.
most importantly- for me, i met lots of new people and some old ones who i hadent seen before. i was and am v excited because of things,
i am aware of where the "movement" is being hugely ineffective- communication- and trying to do something about it. and having fun doing that.
the irish social forum is part of something bigger, something that is growing. it is fundamentally starting to change the nature of how we are living on and with this planet and people.
it can only grow and grow
how- more people get invovled
why- because its a buzz
"dunk" is the same person as "iosaf/ipsiphi"? Right? Or else some of "os as if"s memes have colonised a new replicatory node in meat space.
Anyway, I don't really understand from your report what happened at the ISF.
communication is the key
thanks to all who made the social forum possible. lots of ideas exchnaged, lots of connections made, new ideas formed and forming
making things exciting and fun does change things- bigtime
everybody wants to get involved with positive things which achieve positive results, ie healthier world.
the most important thing is communication, informing people of whats going on.
we use very little of our creativity, in my opinion, i believe. we are creative animals, we enjoy it.
be creative, improve communication techniques, be clear, be inclussive, make new people to this stuff welcome.
the exhibition about life will be on @ may, as well as the demos so many of you are already into. the exhibition will have films, talks, workshops, wanders, social events.
moore street is the heart of the city. in the past the irish had to leave and go to the world, ie my family from clare,
1-america
2-canada
3-england
4-dublin
5-home
now the world is coming to ireland, to dublin. moore street is the epitomy of this. it is the most exciting time EVER in irish history, as well as world history. we are living in the NETWORK AGE. embrace this diversity. its beautiful.
we are learning to share ideas more. with that a new, beautiful, funny, creative and lively world is forming.
im sure everybody wants to have the most exciting life possible.
social forums are allowing this to happen, thanks. it has been a pleasure so far, the ball is only starting to roll
.
