till they hear us.
Readers will naturally have noticed that Israel is taking up a lot of indymedia ireland space of late. They may be interested to know that the first statement of the Irish EU Presidency has been issued and it concerns Israel.
They might have realised that Israel is on our table, that we are knocking on the table and we are not going away.
This is part of what "european expansion" is about. policy area: external affairs.
"Bertie Says:" [sloppy big hug Bertie]
The Presidency of the European Union calls upon the Israeli Government to clarify a reported statement by one of its Ministers to the effect that Israel intends to expand its settlements in the occupied area of the Golan Heights.
The expansion of Israeli settlements in the Golan Heights would work against the achievement of a comprehensive peace settlement in the region and this would not serve the long term security interests of the Israeli people.

Israeli soldier arrested for attempted murder of British activist
The Israeli sniper who shot activist Tom Hurndall brain dead has been arrested. The army leadership has now admitted that its initial accusations of Tom being armoured and in camouflage, as well as its claim that the soldier was returning Palestinian fire, were lies.
The arrest is particularly important as opening fire on activists in Palestine is becoming increasingly regular for the Israeli army. Last Friday Israeli soldiers fired live ammunition into a non-violent action. Gil Na'amati, an Israeli anarchist against the Wall, and an American woman of the International Solidarity Movement were seriously injured. On 1 January the Israeli army fired over 100 rubber bullets aimed at people's heads during another demonstration. Approximately ten people were taken to the hospital and deportation orders were issued against four activists, including a Swedish MP.

Budrus Update: 15 Wounded & Member of Sweden's Parliament Arrested
by Haaretz 03 gen 2004

"The IDF imposed a curfew on the village and conducted house-to-house searches for the stone throwers"
January 2 2004:
A member of Sweden's parliament arrested as he took part in a protest against the construction of the West Bank separation fence, was released last night and was later to fly home, a spokeswoman for the Interior Ministry said.
Green Party lawmaker Gustav Fridolin was one of four foreigners arrested Wednesday during a scuffle with troops at Budrus, a West Bank Village near the line with Israel southeast of Tel Aviv, where bulldozers are clearing ground for a scetion of a 750-kilometer barrier around the West Bank.
All four were slated for deportation.
Interior ministry spokeswoman, Tova Ellinson said Fridolin waived the usual three-day grace period to allow deportees an opportunity to appeal and would leave Israel voluntarily yesterday evening.
Fifteen people were lightly wounded yesterday during another demonstration against the separation fence, near Budrus north of Modi'in.
Most of the wounded were Palestinians and two of the injured were foreign peace activists, who were hit by rubber coated bullets.
The demonstrators were marching to protest the wounding of Israeli protestors and Swedish member of parliament Fridolin a day earlier.
Israeli peace activists said that after the march ended, some of the protestors threw stones at Israel Defense Forces troops, who then fired tear gas and rubber coated bullets at them.
The IDF imposed a curfew on the village and conducted house to house searches for the stone throwers.

Anarchist actions will continue against the wall. Until the wall is gone. Fot at heart "the wall" is a vital part of our collective European conscienceness. Our leaders might have wished us "full employment" for 2010, but we of the real Europe that yet is not even considered suitable to join the "club", remember the wall.
& the borders.
That is what Europe means to Europeans, and we will extend that freedom to Israeli and Palestinian alike.

It is most curious that if "we" had a good reputation we might be effective, but we do not, which is perhaps why we are most effective where reputations are almost irretrievably lost.

Moreover, having personally been under Syrian shell fire from the Golan, I heartily agree with Israel's decision to annex the heights from its depraved neighbour.
Describing another nation as being "depraved" looks to me like racism. Stop to think before banging off that type of comment. Israeli soldiers fire live ammunition at unarmed protestors. Would you not consider that "depraved", Avi?
As for the previous comment, indymedia have also been accused of being pro-Israel, so they must be making an effort to strike a fair balance, but I suppose it's impossible to satisfy extremists of one sort or another.
Also what is wrong with loving "islamists"? Should we not try to be fair to people of all backgrounds?
Well, when the guy next to you has his head blown off by arbitrary firing, it really sets you thinking. Try these links on the existence (or rather, non-existence of human rights in Syria). Consider that this is the neighbourhood in which Israel has to live, before you sound off on the Middle East:
http://hrw.org/doc/?t=mideast_pub&c=syria
http://www.state.gov/g/drl/rls/hrrpt/2001/nea/8298.htm
I was told by someone who was in both Saddam Hussein's jails and Assad's jails, that the Syrian ones were worse. By the way, this is how they treat their Jews:
http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/anti-semitism/syrianjews.html
On that basis, I think it's fair to call Syria a depraved country.
It would be more accurate to say that a state is depraved, rather than a country. A country consists of ALL the people, whereas a state is the government and it's institutions. You cannot condemn an entire race for the wrongs carried out by a government, and let's face it, ALL governments are depraved, including of course the Israeli one.
and stop pointing the finger of blame at your neighbours Avi.
You claim that your country is a beacon of "democracy" in your region.
I put it to you that a democratic state does not engage in the Anschluss of the West Bank, and the killing of unarmed protestors, and internment and torture of political opponents in secret jails.
No amount of accusation by you and your Zionist excusenik fellow travellers will change this fact.
Israel is a renegade state and needs to be brought to its knees by sanctions just as South Africa was in the 80s.
Boycott Israel!
welcome and all as the potential prosecution of Tom Hurndall's assassin is the British media forgot all about their own military's litany of murder of unarmed civilians.
The murder of Aidan McAnespie in Aughnacloy by a single shot from 300m range while he walked to a football match is a good example:
Aidan McAnespie
On Saturday, February 21st, 1988 the 23 year old Aughnacloy footballer walked to see his Gaelic football team play a match on a field close to the border. As he approached the checkpoint, a British Army soldier fired his weapon, piercing the man in the back, killing him.
The official reason for the alleged accident is that a British soldier's wet hand slipped as he was cleaning his gun, causing him to release the trigger, discharging three rounds. One of which ricocheted off the road, striking McAnespie in the back. The soldier responsible was never prosecuted. He was subsequently charged with manslaughter, but the charges were dropped. The McAnespie family, friends, and colleagues believe it was premeditated and intentional because he was one of the few Catholic men in the area to go back and forth on a regular basis.
This case just adds to the list of victims of the security force. Killings and injustices that every family and persons had to endure and make part of everyday life in the north before peace proceedings commenced. Aidan McAnespie will never be forgotten in the border towns of County Tyrone. A memorial marker has been erected at the spot where Aidan was shot at the border.
In Boston, his memory has been continued with this football club bearing his full name, established in November 1995. The Club has come a long way in the past few years by being one of the most competitive and widely supported clubs in Boston.

On 4 January, 2004 Five conscripted Conscientious Objectors were sentenced to an additional year in prison on top of the year they have been held for refusing to serve
in the IDF. The sentence is, in effect, an unlimited one as the prosecution intends to
jail them till they agree to serve. That's the price they will pay for refusing to be part
of the brutal occupation.
