Or at least some of your hard earned dollars! The Concert has been cancelled. All of the tabloid trailers for the riots have been filed. The 'Powers that Be' are planning a fence around Farmleigh House. The Elites are making their travel plans as are the protesters. The Army are practicing their formations and looking for Wombles in the bushes at the Curragh. Only one piece of the puzzle is missing - An Independent Media Centre to tell the story. We need help to create it. Come and have a look at the space available for the Centre this Sunday – help clean it up, talk about what could happen there and volunteer some time over the next month to make this thing a reality. Click here for more details on how to get involved and info on how to make a donation to the Mayday IMC.
Draft Timetable The Community Media Network have donated the use of a large building, right in the centre of Dublin, for use as a media centre. It has the capacity to house an independent cinema, a photography exhibition, workshops, computer lab – have a look at the plans below to get an idea of the scale of what is available to us.. A team has been working to put together a timetable of events – getting films for screenings, people to give workshops, sourcing photography and other material for exhibitions – have a look at the draft timetable for what is being proposed – there’s still space for you to fill. Fixtures have been planned and equipment is being borrowed – but more is still needed. If you have access to stackable chairs for a week, a weekend or even a night – get in touch. If you can contribute a van for a few hours we’d love to hear from you. Anything we can’t borrow we’re going to have to hire – so rest assured any monies donated will be well used. Finally – people are needed. Getting the building ready, stewarding, taking bookings for workshops, making / selling tea & coffee – there is loads of work. We are also going to be putting together a newsdesk and photography / video dispatch teams. Come along and learn or teach or help – whatever. Be Indymedia |

in true anarcho/March 1st style you tell the cops everything they need to know about busting the IMC centre on may day. IMC could be the only way of getting an eyewitnesss account out of the demos in Dublin, but not after the coppers get there first.
idiots!
Being open means that:
1. More people can get involved
2. We don't kid ourselves that cops can't find out what they want.
3. We have to organise to plan _around_ disruption.
The only other alternative is secretive, closed groups doing things _for_ other people.
That tends to be alienating, and ultimately doesn't achieve the goal of getting _everyone_ that can be arsed to do something except complain to get out there and _do_ something.
Being open also reduces the chances/excuses for the cops to interfere because it's clear and obvious that what we're doing is legal and can't be interfered with without serious repercussions as it becomes obvious that free speech and political activity is being interfered with.
....
They're not going to be involvd in any demonstrations this year at all. Maybe they've figured out that everybody hates their guts....
In fairness now copper, think realistically. The Gardaí aren't just going to come around and smash up a media centre and be brutally unfriendly to everyone just because it isn't RTE. There might not be anything about free speech in the Constitution but that doesn't mean that the government don't want to be seen denying it to anyone. It happens occasionally of course, but with something on this scale it would never go unnoticed.
Where and when is this place going to be?
If you click on the map link you see.. a map. It's just off mountjoy square.
If you click on the timetable link you'll see it's running from 22nd April to 3rd May.
But it needs people before that to get it up and running.
Great you now have a paypal links
But don't let it get lost in this story stick it in the side bar with a big graphic to remind us all to send cash, even after mayday
I can come down to Dublin for a week before Mayday, and just play lackey for anything that might be needed...also intereested in running a musical instrument making workshop, for bring da noise at Farmleigh. Plus still got that list of people who were up for da convergance centre type stuff from the last gathering. Haven't sussed aplace to stay yet, will there be accomodation available?
Let us know...
fantastic idea, and fantastic accomodation for it, what a building to get ahold of!
re the cops busting it:
how can they legally stomp in and shut down a media centre? no illegal activity going on inside means no warrant and what leg have they got to stand on in doing that? i don't think it's much to worry about, it's all legit and peaceful, photo exhibition and a newsdesk and film screenings? what, no petrol bomb factory?! OF COURSE NOT!!!
perhaps set up a mailing list for people interested in helping out to join, would make it easier for them to get involved which is important. maybe even put this article with the mailing list link up as a permanent fixture on the homepage since it's such an important event for indymedia, cos you gotta get that across to people.
Hey,
Judging by these plans looks like no school for me for that week ;) I'll have to find a way up to Dublin from Limerick and then find a place to stay.. Anyway, I'd be willing to help out with out on any IT, technical, internet needs you might have for the week. Even if i i'm not able to help out then I'll definately be up there for the weekend protests.
Thanks,
Graeme
i'm a lone video-activist wanting to come to dublin from london, but would first like to make some links with other 'videoers'. figure the best way to film is in teams - multiple angles and protection for all. would be greatful if someone could get to me at mailto:disident_P@hotmail.com .
cheers ears.
a lot can be done.
time for indymedia to really get out there, present itself as an open system that anyone can get invovled in.
times are changing
challenge apathy by having a buzz, being creative. all can do it
its infectious, having a good time is desireable by all
doing things is good
well done to all involved in this process
just how good, informative, exciting, open, participitive, evolving an exhibition can we create??
what would make it the most amazing and ground breaking one in todays world
whos exhibition- imc ireland, or imc global, dublins, irelands, the worlds??
are we hooking up with other imc nodes, as part of exhib?
its exciting stuff
mayday indymedia centre - interior
the media centre and programme are looking great
i am concerned about the exhibition.
perhaps all things are already worked out for it, if so can clarification be made
1-entry
originally i thought it would be an open exhibition, that anybody could arrive at and visit, now it seems its not as open, people have to be screened and approved on entry? (i understand the need fro security etc)
2-the exhibition, static and dynamic parts
at present all the talk seems to be on the programme of events and the exhibition sounds like - and there will be imc photos on the walls.
is there a group thinking about the exhib, whats going up, in what way
i think this is a fine opportunity for imc to communicate what it is, whats going on in the world, excite people and get more invovled.
it would be good and interesting, and good as a sort of model of "open systems" if the stuff is on the walls, people see it and have the opportunity to respond to it. whether this is having a feedback or comments book that people write their views into, or printouts from the thread on imc- as people see the stuff, the access the site, find that piece, add their views on the thread, each day next page(s) of thread printed out and added on top of previous pages= a pyhsical representation of the virtual system that is indymedia.ie
is there open parts of the exhib, whereby anyone can add stuff, if so what rules must be used?
will vid footage be part of the exhib, if noise is prob will there be computers/ tvs with earphones?- could this stuff be housed in the little room in the screenings room, access from the corner door?
will there be a space/ board/ table for people to add images, their stuff etc, if so how is this managed?
is there a website or part of indymedia.ie set up specifically for the exhib- a sort of virtual side?
will we have a part of the exhib with all the cuttings from "mainstream media" about mayday, indymedia etc- anybody video the primetime piece, will this be shown?- can it be viewed at some stage?
3- publicity of event
can we now send word out to everyone, using all systems, that this is happening- that we would like people to attend and get invovled- ie event guide all newspapers etc
invite some groups to attend- artistic, cultural etc
announce an opening night, invite people- as is common for exhibitions
- flyers and pamphlets being distributed for it
________________________________________________
sorry if this has rambled- i feel there is need for wider and more open communication about this event/exhibition, that now is the time to be approaching people and asking them if they would like to get invovled- asking for material to show etc
where is the best place for discussion on this issue- the website, imc-lists- public meetings- emails
i would suggest an open meeting, maybe in the centre, as was used for clean up- maybe next tuesday eventing?
________________________________________________
i hope many people come to this who are involved
but more so i hope many people come to this who are not involved, who know little or nothing about indymedia, politics or the state of the world
it is these people who should be our target audience
if things are presented in a clear way
if those things say- the world is always changing and being part of the process that tries to imrove things is exciting and open to all to get invoved, so be excited, get invovled, enjoy the life
today i go into art gallerys with tthe hope that i see something which grabs me, shakes me, affects me, makes me want to do something
it rarely happens, most all i view is utter shite
indymedia exhibition will do that/ should do that
today art stuff is mostly something to look at- we have become a very viewing culture
we go into gallery, view stuff, respond in thoughts or words and thats about it
this exhib can be an "open participitive system"- anyone can come and see- be excited, then most importantly- get involved
thats the key
if its exciting more and more will get invovled
and it is exciting
the way life should be
think global/ art local
we are invovled with a similar project in lille- euro city of culture next july, perhaps some of you will get invovled
http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/oxford/2003/06/273074.html
is a short 35 second film which tries to make same point in clearer shorter way
think global ART local
hi there, coming from london to dublin mainly for the saturday night make some noise thing outside the delegates get together. Bringing some tunes and a small radio transmitter so if people can bring ghetto blasters, radio, fm transmitter sound systems, wind up radios - whatever then that would be grand and we can make various noises.
also, any slogans that can possibly be shouted over the top of it all woull dbe handy if anyones got any. Like 'say no to rape, say no to eu' - maybe not the best one but you know what i mean, or something which triggers your average conservative voter - like a statistical slogan which even they can't argue with? just thoughts.
