Not sure if Damien English still qualifies as being Young FG but his anarchic behaviour on The Week in Politics last night does not seem to be in keeping with YFG values. He really needs to learn to let other people finish their point and not interrupt in typical ignorant Blueshirt fashion. It is hard enough to stomach Eoghan Harris and the thuggish Mc Dowell shouting people down without FG getting in on the act.

so FG are gonna lose big? are the far left gonna win big? or at all? Joe Higgins isnt going to win a seat as his area is overcrowded. he is competing with the 2 Labour, Greens and Sinn Fein. He has no base apart from his constituency and Clare Dalys. Whats that bout 15000 votes plus a few others? Oh and 500 at Joes homecoming? not really a lot out of 1.3 million dubs. Im a realist about FGs chances. ye should be too- Ye wont win anything that amounts to much

Exactly. Look at them. They are a f**king disgrace. Vardhkar is a Councillor in a very strong working class area. He voted for the non-collection of bins in that area. I'd see him go. Dolphin was the chair of the council during the bin tax. Again another to go.

Mitchell only barely hung onto a Dail seat! He will not be elected as an MEP. That means that FG will lose their seat in Dublin. Mitchell and FG don't even want to get elected. Mitchell was press-ganged into it. If they do win then FG would be in a even more difficult position in Dublin as they would, in effect, be without a TD.

Fine Gael are only a rural party that are a remnant of Ireland's past. FF and PDs are representing the people FG used to represent. FG are going, only thing that will save them is the Labour Party going into coalition with them.

FG are in terminal decline, they will do badly in these elections. Exactly how they will do is hard to predict due to the oddity of our electoral system. One thing is certain FG will lose and lose badly. Why will people vote for a loyal opposition??

FG do not have the best ticket in the Euro elections. The best candidate is the SP candidate Joe Higgins. Higgins at least has a record of struggle on the bin tax and is a principled opponent of EU militarisation and the dictatorship of the European Round Table. He has more principle than the FG fly by nights who just entered into politics a few days ago in order to get themselves a nice cozy job.

Where were FG marginal in the last Euros?

We were close to taking a second in Leinster

Marginal in Dublin, Munster & Connaught-Ulster?!? Rubbish!

nowhere was there a danager that we would lose a seat.

This time out; we'll take three or four and put in one hell of a show in the East, where FG have by far and away the best ticket in Ireland for a European election.

FG have serious difficulties, but people cannot ignore the 20%+ of Irish people who have consistently supported them and contiunue to do so.

Anyway there are 13 seat now, and I am very confident of holding three if not all four.

Remember there is going to be 12 seats in the Euro elections not 15 like last time. FG were marginal for many of those seats. And that was when they had a much stronger vote. FG may win a seat somewhere, PDs aren't running in Dublin and either is Cox in South so they could pick up a seat but FG are in a terminal decline. They will suffer very badly in Dublin, it does look like Dolphin and Vadhkar could lose their seats that is what it looks like on the ground. The only reason that they will still retain a huge chunk of council seats is because there are more councillors per head of population in the rural areas.

I find it hard to believe that anyone is palusibly suggesting that FG will end up with no MEPs after the next eleciton.

If you go through each constituency, you'll see strong FG candidates:

North/West: Higgins & Madeline Talyor Quinn, are well respected candidates, and it would be extremely foolish to believe that Higgins won't win a seat.

East; Mairead McGuinness & Averil Doyle - Two extremely well known candidates, both very smart & articulate with huge contacts on the ground

south: Coveney is looking more certain by the day, especially with Cox having pulled out

Dublin: With no PD candidate, and Royston being not only a muppet, but an unpopular muppet, I would expect Gay Mitchell to be strong candidate for the second right wing seat in Dublin

So I find it hard to accept that FG's representation will fall below 3 MEPS, and would wager heavily on them holding four seat.

With regards to the local elections - That we'll hold no seats inn Fingal!?! Look at Vardhkar & Dolphin, I find it dificult to expect that neither of those candidates will be elected.

FG is going to take a hit from the 32% of seats that they won previously, but that is to be expected. I would still expect them to hold a vote at the 24% mark, and still be by far and away the 2nd largest party in the state.

Just as i can't wish SF's vote away, i don't think that you should wish FG's away.

Hang on YFGer, you are going to do very very badly in these elections, it looks as though you will have no MEPs and lose about 50% of your council seats. In Dublin you could have some councils like Fingal and South Dublin where you fail to even get one councillor elected. SO I find it a bit rich when you slag off the electoral chances of the far left. FG are on the way down electorally, the far left is on the way up, OK the SWP will probably fuck up again in the elections but the SP will probably do very well and probably out poll FG in many wards.

Regarding the Greens and the coalition. The Greens have no problems with going into coalition with the right wing FG party. They have sold out over the past few years. All Sargaent wants to see is himslef in a government Merc, he will do this at any cost.

As things got onto UCD for some reason, prehaps the UCD centric outlook of the first commenter, it is worth mentioning that the only two groups to organise activities in favour of bin tax were 1, FG at the time of Joe Higgins release (they picketed the hotel that Joe Higgins had a 'hoemcoming' rally, they were outnumbered about 500-10!)and 2. The UCD Green Party, the UCD Greens were responsible for putting up posters in UCD calling bin tax protesters 'scrounging bastards'

Lads if ye want to have a good laugh at the ridiculousness of these socialists trawl through the anti bin tax section and read them argue over who jumped on whose bandwagon, SWP or SP, or how they wont have a preelection pact as the SWP is unelectable. No, Fine Gael wouldn't be able to get 2,000 people to march to Farmleigh.

What they can do however, is get 6,500 people to an Ard Fheis, run over 700 candidates in the local elecitons, have the support of more than one in five voters in all opinion polls, and be members of the largest bloc in European Politics, the EPP.

So quite clearly they are insignificant when you compare them to two, maybe three, thousand 'protestors' from all over Europe.

BTW, I am hearing reports that upwards of 3,000 are marching on Farmleigh. This despite the fact that people are very tired after the earlier protests. Don't think FG would be able to get that.

at least in the rest of Europe there are coherent and popular left wing parties, take a look at Italy and France. In Ireland, those who call themselves of the left, are so incompetent and foolish, that on the great labour day, they can not get 2,000 people out ot march, and have to import people to bolster their numbers.

I can't think of anyone who deserves the title "brainless political nobody" more than the charming William Lavelle. He was briefly chair of YFG in UCD but the committee shafted him after a few weeks because he was so useless. He told me just before the 2002 election that he expected FG to win 60 seats. Oh, how we laughed! Now it seems the cretin has got himself made "president" (jesus!) of YFG. They must be even more desperate than we thought...

Anyone involved in student activism will be able to tell you that YFG have done two notable things in the last four years:

1)In 2001, they created a scandal in the UCD press when the committee refused to pay for John Bruton's lunch in the college restaurant after he'd spoken at a public meeting (it was a week before Noonan's coup)

2) In 2003, they re-ran the Coke boycott referendum and managed to increase the margin of defeat by a mighty 1000%

It's a privilege to be able to see such concentrated idiocy put to use in the service of bad causes - evil tempered by incompetence. I urge the IMC editors to leave this story up as long as they can, and if possible put up pictures of the YFG elite so we can laugh at their stupid square heads...
