Tralee Anti-War Group - Protest March

Tralee Anti- War group’s public meeting on June 14th attracted a large audience from Tralee and its surrounding areas. The purpose of the meeting was to highlight and discuss George Bush’s forthcoming visit to Ireland on Friday June 25th. Speakers, including: Martin Ferris, (Sinn Fein), David Grey, (Green Party), Billy Leen, (Independent) and Kieran Allen (SWP & IAWM) were invited to address the local people before discussion was opened to the floor.

It was interesting to note that while these speakers have quite individual political opinion there was a consensus on the issue of ‘Bush’; George Bush must be stopped. David Grey stated ‘the Iraq war is an oil war’. Billy Leen spoke about Ireland’s compromised neutrality and his own personal efforts to prevent Shannon airports’ use as a fuelling stop for U.S. army troops. Martin Ferris meanwhile insisted that ‘anti-Bush’ is not ‘anti-American’ it is anti-American foreign policy and comments from the floor demonstrated a local willingness to take physical action to stop Bush.

One of a number of ‘stop Bush’ anti-war protests taking place around the country is organised for this Friday June 25th, 7 p.m. The march will leave from outside the Brandon Hotel. The following morning (Saturday 26th) at 6.30 a.m. a bus is leaving to travel to the protests at Shannon airport and Dromoland Castle. It will return Saturday evening. Tickets can be purchased from Kieran McNulty, ph: 087 6716009. The next Tralee anti-war meeting will be held in the Abbeygate hotel at 8 p.m. on Wednesday 23rd June.
