I'm not being racist but there's a reason for immigrtation control.
You're saying that it's necessary to prevent _all_ sub-Saharan Africans from immigrating because _some_ of the sub-Saharan Africans have HIV. Classic racism. Thanks for making the point so clearl.y.
are they all the same thing ?
obviously (preventative) healthcare and the circumstances in sub- sharan africa aren't that great so isn't it lucky we can look after some of these guys/girls over here
Fuck that. It's not lucky if some of them don't know they have AIDS and are spreading it around Ireland.
Its wrong to exploit human illness - to support a racist argument.
And who was tested anyway ?
So we return those who's lives are in danger in there home countries because they are ill. should we send our own HIV positive members over there too, i mean its mostly just junkies and gays.
we could get rid of all our undesireables. Does this not just raise the case for increased intervention in HIV/AIDS prevention in sub-saharan africa rather then just fencing them all in.
Its a terrible disease, it must be stopped EVERYWHERE. The world has the resources to do it but we don't. I'd question my own attitude to race if keeping them out is the first reaction to those statistics rather then how can we stop it happening anywhere
President Bush of the USA has allocated billions of dollars of American taxes to fight AIDS in Africa. So, he's making a good start there, I hope the rest of the world follows his example.
his gov and the policies it promotes also take from and restrict these countries abilitiesto get themselves on their feet and look after their people
not to mention the slow acting and greedy pharmacetuical companies...
The reported assault and rape in Cork at the weekend is extremely disturbing.
Some of what is said to have occured suggests to me that the attack may have been racist.
I would ask those who promoted the referendum on citizenship to even now consider how they might act responsibly and seek to foster tolerance.
Whether or not it was racist by design, that such a brutal attack on strangers or relative strangers (or on anybody) could take place in 2004 is just appalling.
I appeal to every person to be anti-racist.
Cillian, what about the attack suggests to you that the motive was race hatred?
The attack occurred at 1 in the morning, in a well to do suburb of Cork City. One of the men was allegedly pistol whipped (suggesting that there was a pistol involved), his cousin was allegedly raped and another man who happened to call to the house while this was going on was lightly beaten. All three (badly beaten man and the other two separately) were taken to a lane in the northside where they were released by the gang. The police stated that they believe that the attack was not racially motivated. All this from a newspaper report (Irish Examiner, I think).
If that is the correct story, it appears to me that it is a specifically targeted attack aimed at an individual for whatever reason.
There has been no fact stated which supports an explanation of 'a personal grudge'.
Almost always immigrants are, in my experience, for good reason, particularly careful to avoid conflict and to give people excuses for violence.
The sheer brutality of the attack and the fact that it went on for 3 hours suggests physcotic behaviour.
I consider that at this time there is cause to fear racist violence may be engendered.
The Gardai are investigating the crimes, it is reported, and this, I presume, includes possible motives.
I would assume that most racist attacks are opportunistic, on the spur of the moment, in the street. I do recognise that there are organised racist attacks on people, particularly in Northern Ireland, but I have not heard of such in this area.
My mind is open as to the motive for this attack but the facts, as reported, lead me to suspect that there is something more going on than pure race hatred (believe me, I know it exists and I abhor it). Also, the fact that the police stated that they don't believe that the attack was racially motivated. I don't believe everything they say either, but all together, it looks to me like there was something else going on.
A Dutch racist rap group DHC have been circulating a song on the Internet which attacks various groups, including Jews and homosexuals. The group also attacked Dutch Liberal MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali for her political views. The former Somali refugee, now in the Labor Party, suprisingly become a leading voice in questioning the Dutch government's multicultural policies.
