From handing over the Chagos Islands to compensating Gerry Adams, Starmer's decisions owe more to human rights lawyers than sound politics. He needs to sack his chum Lord Hermer before he shipwrecks his Government.

One figure that has been repeatedly cited in the grooming gangs debate is that 1 in 73 Muslim men in the town of Rotherham has been prosecuted for grooming gang offences. However, this figure is slightly misleading.

Trauma of Chechnya's ongoing war on health status and living conditions

Trauma of Chechnya's ongoing war on health status and living conditions

This report presents the findings of two quantitative surveys conducted by MSF among the displaced populations in Ingushetia and Chechnya to gain information on living conditions and health status. (The main findings are presented in the table below). People interviewed had been displaced for at least five years. We found a population living in unacceptable conditions, traumatized by conflict, and in fear of their safety.

Physical and mental health needs were significant, but access to appropriate services is at best problematic.

The authorities are currently undertaking a policy of moving people, against their will, from Ingushet ia to Chechnya, but conditions in both locations are unacceptable and this will do nothing to improve the plight of this vulnerable population.

The authorities must ensure protection and appropriate living circumstances for this displaced population. This will require greater attention from the international community to this conflict that has been largely ignored for the last decade.

many of you in Ireland will have seen a recent channel 4 interview with "Aslan's general" which caused very serious objections in Russia and was not screened in other European countries.
the channel 4 team, interviewed Aslan's associate in a russian police "anti-terrorist" t shirt, which was obviously a trophy from somewhere. The russians have held Aslan's team, (Shamil Basayev in particular) responsible for the attacks on Beslen last year, which for them justifies the latest stages of a war on islamic fundamentalist seperatists in the Caucus region of the former Soviet empire.
Basayev is the Russian "number one wanted terrorist", Aslan was number 2. He was a former president of the break away "Chechnyan islamic republic" the attempted establishment of which started the horrific war for natives and russian troops alike.

The chechnyan war has waged almost without let, since the split up of the Soviets. The caucus as you ought by now know as well as being the focus of Russian military activity is also an ethnic and religious patchwork of poorly economically developed mountainous regions divided as much by history as by languages. There are more distinct languages in this small part of the world than any other comparable area.
It is also a main route used by various mid- asian mafias to Europe.

These ordinary people (whatever foot they use to bury their dead with) need our support, solidarity and peace. And we first register that by expressing our interest in their affairs.
