Labour condemns Shannon warport

Ongoing use of Shannon contributing to illegal war in Iraq

Issued : Wednesday 3 November, 2004
Statement by Emmet Stagg TD
Chief Whip &Spokesperson on Nuclear Safety

Labour Party Chief Whip Emmet Stagg has said the Government’s ambivalence over the war in Iraq is exposed over the growing use of Shannon Airport by US troops on their way to combat in Iraq. He was speaking at an Irish Anti-War Movement press conference in Dublin ahead of a protest at the airport on Saturday.

“The figures published a couple of weeks ago by Shannon Airport show that so far this year, over 100,000 US troops have passed through the airport on their way to Iraq.

“By the end of this year, some 350,000 US troops will have passed through Shannon in the past three years.

“I do not regard the response of Defence Minister Willie O’Dea or Transport Minister Martin Cullen to questions about the frequent landings at Shannon of a jet used to transport al-Qaeda suspects to Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere as adequate.

“I remain concerned about repeated allegations that ‘suspect terrorists’ are being transported in planes through Shannon on their way to illegal detention and possibly torture for information.

“It is not sufficient for Minister Cullen to state that each landing by this plane was ‘a technical stop’ and that no passengers left the plane. What he has not answered is whether prisoners, illegally held or otherwise, are being transported through Shannon. He should put himself in a position to answer the questions so many Irish citizens are reasonably asking.”

firtst off: The IAWM would be wrong to call for foreign troops out of Shannon. What happens if in a years time the US invades Venezeula and a hypothetical army goes to militarily defend the Venezuelan people? i would fully support this army and call for Shannon to be used for this purpose. The IAWM are right to call for US military out of Shannon and should also call for all armies of capitalism out of Shannon.

As for Labour. they are hypocrites. They want to go into government with Fine Gael, who support ireland joining NATO. If Labour are elected the US use of Shannon will continue and probably get worse. They are also hypocrites as on March 1st 2003 they teamed up with the capitalist press, boycotted the protests there and added substantially to the scare tactics employed by the ruling class.

"What happens if in a years time the US invades Venezeula and a hypothetical army goes to militarily defend the Venezuelan people?" The army won't need to use Shannon - flying pigs have the range to take off from Dublin airport.

the point I'm making is that calling for foreign troops out of Shannon is a nationalistic. I don't want Shannon to be used by any capitalist army, US or Irish.

author by Raypublication date Thu Nov 04, 2004 16:05author address author phone Report this post to the editors

A call for 'Capitalist troops out of Shannon' would be laughed at, and a call for 'Irish troops out of Shannon' would get some pretty weird looks.
God knows I'm critical enough of the IAWM, but I don't think they can really be criticised for campaigning about _this_ war in particular, rather than the evils of capitalism and any wars it may engage in in the future.

I am criticising the suggestion for a demand of 'foreign troops out of Shannon' not the IAWM campaigning against just the war.

What do people think about the SWP's latest attempt to resussitate the anti war movement? They have protests planned all over the shop and have public meetings in every college and in every town. all reports so far are that there is not a mood yet, and only SWPers are at the meetings/protests.

Shannon Airport is a civilian airport in a town with barely the capacity to put out a factory fire. That is, to put out a fire where firefighters already know what they're walking into. Tim Hourigan and Ed Horgan, attended "public" (they were soon asked to leave) meetings about safety issues in Shannon 2002. People in the Shannon area deserve jobs that don't cost other people their lives, and that don't risk their own lives and the safety of their homes and families nearby.

We need to withdraw our consent from Bush's "war and terror" campaign. It's most obvious manifestation is the military use of Shannon Airport and Irish airspace. The Phoenix reported in 2001, 2002 and 2003 that Ireland parroted the Washington line on Afghanistan and Iraq in EU meetings too. Changing that will take longer of course. We've got to work where we are, and at what we're good at.

The use of any airport or other facility to aid and abet the transfer of U.S. troops and/or prisoners makes that facility a legitimate military target in the War On (imperialist) Terror.

author by barrypublication date Sun Nov 07, 2004 20:00author address author phone Report this post to the editors

The American observer is quite right unfortunately. Remember Spain only had 600 troops in Iraq along with a massive and vocal anti-war movement.. Once Fallujah has been annihilated Muslim anger will quite understandably be at boiling point.

This countries cosy little relationship with Britain and the US could prove very costly indeed. Simply put the Irish state is actively collaborating in the massacre of Arab civlians, the seizure of Arab lands and wealth and the destruction of their towns and families. If that doesnt make Ireland a legitimate target I dont know what will. I honestly hope we arent but.....
