April Meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group

The file on their winter workshop 2005 was closed at last night's meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group. Some thought was given to the prospects for their winter workshop in 2006.

A special meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group (CEHG) took place at Crudden’s, Jenkinstown, commencing at 8.00 p.m. on Saturday 16 April 2005.

The meeting heard that approximately 11 copies of the Pringle report "Cancer Mortality and Morbidity in County Louth" had been sold so far. The book can be bought in Greenore Post Office or in The Bookshop, Long Walk Shopping Centre, Dundalk, or from any member of the committee of CEHG. The price is €5.

The treasurer, Sean Crudden, reported that an application for a grant to GROUNDWORK (NI) to construct an open-air, traditional handball alley had been rejected. Mr Crudden also reported that, for technical reasons, COMHAIRLE had refused an application for a grant towards the publication of the Pringle report.

A cheque from the Louth County Enterprise Board for €300 had been received over a month ago and this had met nearly all of the expense arising from the organisation and running of the January 2005 winter workshop on "Organisation and Health."

It was provisionally decided to organise a winter workshop to be held on Saturday 28 January 2006 on the theme "Isolation." Words arising and connected with this theme were "Hermit" "Schools" "Religion" "Bullying" "Mental Health" "Community."

Other issues discussed were: disposal of garden waste, litter and unauthorised dumping, hard water in the Cooley water supply. It was felt that public waste disposal policy was not working properly and that bin charges were too dear especially for retired people and low-income families. It was suggested that the public should be fully informed about the snags caused by hard water in the domestic supply and that they should be thoroughly advised about what should be done.

The secretary, Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes PhD OMA, told the meeting that he had proposed Sean Crudden for election as secretary of The North Louth Area Forum (a lower-tier arm of local government) and he wished him well in the election.

It was decided to organise an outing to the Kingscourt Handball and Racquet Club departing from Jenkinstown on Monday 30 May at 6.30 p.m. A previous outing to Carrickmacross Emmetts’ handball facility on 14 March had been enjoyable and informative.

The next meeting of CEHG was fixed for Friday 24 June 2005 starting at 8.00 p.m. in The Strand, Omeath. All are welcome.
