Dissenting the G8

category international | summit mobilisations | news report author Tuesday May 24, 2005 12:03author by DissentHead - Individual rant Report this post to the editors

Hundreds or maybe even thousands of people from Ireland will be travelling to Gleneagles, Scotland in early July to join others from all over the planet in protesting against the G8 Summit there. Dissent is one group organising to help people get there and we wanted to tell you why we are going. Once the protests are on you will hear about it on Sky News but as Mayday showed last year in Dublin you can't believe much of what the media tell you.

Who we are?

Anyone can travel with us but you can be sure amongst that number you'll find many who
- Marched on Farmleigh on Mayday last year
- Travelled to Shannon to try and stop the refuelling of US warplanes
- Blockaded bin trucks when the council were jailing people
- Campaigned against the racist referendum
- Partied on Reclaim the Streets
- Work where you work or live where you live

Why are we going?

The G8 are the leaders of the eight most powerful countries - they meet every year to decide how to make us
- work harder for less money
- turn a blind eye to the desperate poverty most of the worlds population live in
- pay for those services that should be free - like health and education
- accept brutal imperialist wars and the invasion of countries
- resign ourselves to the destruction of our environment in the name of the great god profit
- be so scared by the spectre of terrorism that we accept massive military spending
- swallow them aggressively pushing 'free trade' agreements on the 3rd world.

What we will do when we get there?

We know that we won't change anything by pleading with the G8 to be nicer. Like the leopard they cannot change their spots - they exist to exploit the people of this planet. We go to Scotland to protest so we can
- meet with each other and build global solidarity against their global exploitation
- show everyone around the globe that resistance is powerful
disrupt their stage managed conference in what ever way we can manage
- demonstrate our alternative through the way we self-organise while we are there

What you can do

This isn't a TV sport - this is your life. Don't just passively watch while the world around you deteorates, get involved in fighting back. You can
- come along with us to Scotland and join in the protests
- talk about these issues with those you work with or live with
- meet up with us afterwards and help to locally fight for a better world
