but leaves some questions unanswered Why did it take a Socialist Party county councillor borrowing a hard hat and sneaking onto a site to uncover the Gama scandal? What were union officials like SIPTU's construction branch secretary, Eric Fleming, doing for the last three years? Why is the Dublin executive of SIPTU not allowed to see the results of the union's own investigation? The striking Gama workers got back the part of their wages which had been stolen by their employer and hidden in a Dutch bank; and at the end of May they voted to accept terms relating to overtime. A big bullying multinational construction firm had manners put on it. |

Jump To Comment: 1An Taisce alleges Gama use of illegal quarry
02 September 2005 12:55
An Taisce has claimed the Turkish-based Gama Construction company is using an illegal quarry in Co Monaghan for material to build the Castleblayney to Carrickmacross N2 road upgrade.
The environmental group said the quarry was sited at Lemgare, Clontibret, around 400 metres from the border and is being used on the National Roads Authority project which is part-funded by the EU.
An Taisce said it was particularly concerned about health and safety matters because it maintained that using a quarry without planning permission is evading a raft of public safety planning conditions.
These include monitoring explosives vibrations, perimeter security, pollution control, road and vehicle movement safety and other EU stipulations.
In a statement, An Taisce said it learned of the unauthorised quarry in early 2004, but Monaghan County Council failed to take enforcement action.
The Department of Environment has been requested to intervene in the matter, but has failed to respond to date.
