RSF welcome release of Rossport 5

category national | miscellaneous | press release author Saturday October 01, 2005 22:46author by Ruairí Óg Ó Brádaigh Publicity Officer - Republican Sinn Féin Report this post to the editors

RSF welcome release of Rossport 5 - Statement by RSF Vice President Des Dalton

Republican Sinn Fein welcomes the release of the Rossport 5 on September 30 and salutes the moral courage and leadership they displayed during their 94 days of imprisonment.

The very fact that they served one day in prison is an indictment of a state, which is willing to jail its own citizens at the behest of multi-national oil companies, whilst it places the safety and welfare of its citizens solely in the hands of these same companies.

The release of the men does not mark the end of the campaign as they themselves have always pointed out; it merely marks a new phase in it.

Firstly the gas extracted from the Corrib gasfield must be refined off shore. Secondly, the Irish people must get a return economically from any exploitation of Ireland's natural resources. Under the present arrangement with Shell and Statoil no royalties will be paid and only 10 per cent tax, the norm is at least 25 per cent.

This arrangement must be renegotiated on terms that will have real benefit for the Irish people. It is thanks to the Rossport 5 and their community that what amounts to the theft of Ireland's natural resources by successive 26 County administrations has been put centre stage.

Yeah how can an abstentionist party "be on a race for the ballot box". RSF and SF have being a seperate party since 1986. THATS NEARLY 20 YEARS!! Wake up !! Support should be welcomed from all sides, whatever your political persuasion.

RSF has not split. There is no split in RSF.

Its great to see the 4 lads from Rossport and mr Shine out again after their incarceration, however what the hell has happened to this site? IRA ARE DISBAND.; so why are ye still commenting on them? also fianna fail or fine gael ,do you really think that people will even think who let down rossport (and might i add its not rossport alone that has this danger inflicked on them), when it comes to voting day people ( myself included) will vote for the person who has done something for them. be they fianna fail, fine gael or labour or sinn fein! good luck to the men !!!!!

of you writing a short article describing all the various republican parties, armies etc. Non-sectarian but not fawning either.

Why the attacks on RSF when its the free state government and shell jailing people and stealing our resources .

Ive had a chuckle about the RSF split too but Rossport is more important . Wise up .

While a prominent member of Republican Sinn Fein at Galway University conducts war-related research financed by Britain they must be regarded as unprincipled dupes and not as anti-imperialists.

the careful and thoughtful preparation of the following posters and street wide banners :-
"floating voters"
"ex-fianna fail voter"
"ex fine gael voter"
"I'll never vote"
They may not be suitable at all occasion, but there are many when you'd be glad to whip them quickly out of the bags and give them a wave.

Yes, RSF has split and everyone except RSF are talking about it. Only a few days after most of the Continuity IRA prisoners in Portlaoise announced that they reject RSF and are going it alone, the silence from RSF is deafening. Some estimates suggest that about 100 members have resigned from the party (about eight cumainn), including a former vice-president who walked out of the Mansion House at the side of Ruairí Ó Brádaigh in 1986. For a party the size of RSF, this is a major haemorrhage.

RSF has split. The Limerick Republican Information Service has been joined by RSF affiliated prisoners in Portlaoise. A new prisoner group has been set up and large numbers of RSF members have left. More at www.aontacht.net

so you think an abstentionist party are out there to get votes? have you taken your medication today or are you too ignorant to be able to distinguish between RSF and the provisionals? For the record RSF spoke out against what was going on in Mayo, as they had the mis-use of shannon, look before any other political party cared.

I was at the high court yesterday
and have been involved in the campaign
since the very start, before Vietnam even
and I was suddenly swamped by the RSF banner outside the court yesterday as I awaited the arrival of the five fighters.
What a load of classic political party
capital gaining,always trying to get
the photo-op just in case someone
might see it and vote for you.
Pathetic.
We are on a campagn against SHELL,
not a race for the ballot box,get your banner out of my face!!

Great statement from RSF. It should be noted the 26 county state has given permission for the same thing to now happen in Donegal. RSF were the first organization to speak out against what was going on in Mayo. SAOIRSE, RSFs paper was the first to break the news that it is now to happen in Donegal. Shell and the free state will meet the same resistance there!

A vigil was held today (Sat Oct 1) outside Cloverhill Prison in Clondalkin , by members of Republican Sinn Fein .

The event lasted for approximately two hours
and was very well received by passing motorists . All but one of the RSF members left shortly after 12 noon to make their way into Dublin city centre for the main Rally ; the one man who stayed behind carried a map-of-Ireland shaped placard ('BOYCOTT SHELL !' wrote on it) and held an Irish Tricolour flag in his other hand . The weather was nasty , but the vigil was a great success . Well worth the soaking we got !

Sharon.

(I had already posted the above in a different thread on this site - apologises to those reading it twice!)

It's great to see Republican Sinn Féin's continued support for the Rossport 5.

Des Dalton and RSF everything you say about the disgraceful attitude of the government is true and is a sad fact of the performance of sucessive Governments.

We the Irish people receive no royalities, while Norway through Statoil get the profits.

Rip Off Republic yet again.
