The Afhgan Hunger strike and immigration in Ireland

The Afghan hunger strike brought into sharp focus the new Ireland into which our country has been transforming over the last 10 years. Our booming economy and relatively high wage levels have drawn many thousands of immigrants into the country in search of a better life here. Much as the Irish once looked to America for the promise of a happier future, so many people from less well off countries now look to Ireland. Many immigrants come to Ireland in better circumstances though, with a job offer in their pocket and expectations of a better life. The oft-repeated accusation is that they are “taking our jobs”. Although it seems logical, this idea is one of the most damaging of all. It stems from a false idea of scarcity that is encouraged by business owners, managers and the media as a whole. |

Just wanted to clear up that asylum seekers are technically allowed to go into 3rd level education, its just that they have to pay foreign student fees, which cost generally €10,000 per year or more. This is obviously impossible to pay for people given 19.10 per week. This means that those asylum seekers that are here doing their leaving Cert, are in reality automatically blocked from going onto College.
I also wanted to elaborate in the fact that food and accommodation costs are covered for asylum seekrs. under the Direct Provision system that was introduced in 1999, asylum seekers are entitled to 3 meals a day, a bed in a hostel, and 19.10 per week per adult. These 3 meals are the only food costs that are covered. Studies have shown that the stnadards of food available in a lot of these hostels are poor, with a dietary needs (e.g. a lot of African people are lactose intolerant) and cultural norms being ignored. Mothers have been found to be so undernourished living in these hostels that they can't physically breast feed their babies. also a lot of these hostel have no kitchen facilities open outside of meal times, or certain hours dufring the day, which creates obvious problems for parents with young babies and children who have to be fed during night time.
To get the 10,000e to go to college an asylum seeker would need to save for 526 weeks which is just over ten years. I can use a calculator me.
