RUC Special Branch ran the UVF - report is tip of the iceberg
The RUC ran the UVF in Belfast and in other parts of the North. RUC Special Branch let their agents in the UVF kill at will. They blocked arrests and tipped off the UVF to raids for arms and explosives.
Former RUC detective, Johnston Browne, opens his account of his years in the RUC, Into the Dark with a description of a vicious beating - his own from RUC colleagues, in an RUC barracks. His 'crime' was to arrest an armed gang of UVF members.
Former RUC Special Branch and Chief Constable 'Sir' Ronnie Flanagan in the frame Brown, whose information is in O'Loan's report, also reveals how he obtained a taped confession from Ken Barrett, in which he explained how he shot Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane in front of his family. RUC Special Branch sabotaged the investigation, stole the tape, tried to substitute a bogus alternative recording, and tried to frame Browne as a lier when he told the Stevens Enquiry some years later. Barrett was only arrested when he was tricked into repeating the confession on a BBC Panorama expose.

In Armagh the RUC were the UVF.
They engaged in sectarian killings, explosions and generalised sectarian harassment and oppression. The Miami Showband massacre of 1975 and the Dublin Monaghan bombings of 1974 are among their claims to fame (or infamy). The SAS in the form of 14th Intelligence aided and abetted this collection of RUC killers, that included John Weir and Billy McCaughey who later confessed to their part. Recently, Weir revealed that he is still under threat from his former employers for spilling the beans on British involvement in organising death squads.
Last week the PSNI Historical Enquiry team apologised to Eugene Reavey for RUC allegations that Reavey was involved in the January 1976 Kingsmillls Massacre of ten Protestant civilians, an accusation that was promoted by Ian Paisley in Westminster in 1999 (and that still appears on unionist websites). Reavey’s three brothers had been killed by an RUC-UVF gang the day before the Kingsmills massacre, three of six nationalists shot dead that day. After Reavey had completed a report to the RUC on the killing of his brothers, one of them commented that they weren’t shot for nothing, they must have been involved in something. Then the malicious RUC whispering campaign against Eugene Reavey started. Reavey noted that it was the RUC themselves who were ‘involved’ and launched a 20 year campaign to get the truth.
