Press Release 12th February 12.00 hours
The Irish Anti War Movement condemned today’s “revelations” of Iranian weapons being supplied to insurgents in Iraq .
The US administration is using allegations of this sort to prepare the ground for attacks on Iran . The US has been stepping up the allegations and threats against Iran . US officials who insisted on anonymity simply asserted that the canisters they displayed had been supplied to Shi’ite militias by Iran , but produced no proof.
However, as Dem Party members of the US Congress have pointed out, there was no direct evidence linking the material to Iran and the intelligence inferences upon which the allegations are based mirror those US claims of Iraqi WMD which was the pretext for the invasion in 2003.
As John Pilger reported in February, “Investigations by the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and others, including British military officials, have concluded that Iran is not engaged in the cross-border supply of weapons. General Peter Pace, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, has said no such evidence exists.”
The occupiers of Iraq , responsible for the deaths of 650,000 Iraqis, are in a poor position to complain about ‘foreign interference’ in Iraq as the US pours further troops and weaponry into that country.
The only reasonable inference to be drawn is this is part of further stepping up the preparations for military attacks on Iran . This must be vigorously opposed. The Irish government must now end its support for the US military occupation of Iraq and US war preparations against Iran by closing Irish airports to US military flights.
