ASSEMBLE 2.00PM AT FORTUNESTOWN SCHOOL, DOWN FROM LIDL, CITYWEST (http://irishantiwar.org). Feeder bus shuttle from Red Cow LUAS Car Park from 1.30pm
To all activists and friends.
We are not alone.
Hundreds of thousands of people marched in cities throughout the world last Saturday to demonstrate against this monstrous war and occupation of Iraq and against a possible attack on Iran; in Australia, Chile, Turkey, South Korea, Malaysia, Greece, Italy, Spain …… and not least in the USA. In Washington tens of thousands of activists, war veterans, politicians and celebrities marched to the Pentagon in freezing conditions to vent their anger at the neo-con warlords inside. Many busloads of people were turned away due to bad weather. Big marches also took place in other US cities.
We stand in solidarity with these US citizens who demand an end to this brutal war.
Do not be fooled by the media focus on the sectarian civil strife in Iraq and the presentation of the occupying forces as trying to keep the peace.
The invasion and occupation by foreign troops have fuelled sectarian strife. It has been an appalling waste of human life for the people of Iraq with estimates of the dead now reaching as high as 650,000. In addition over 3,000 US soldiers have been killed. The Pentagon admits the monthly cost of the war is $8.4 billion.
The only way to end this carnage is for the occupying forces to leave Iraq and the whole middle-east and to allow the people there to decide their own future.
Join us this Saturday to vent your anger at the complicity of the Irish Government in supporting this war through its facilitation at Shannon Airport of the US Military Machine and CIA torture flights.
Speakers include; Patricia Mc Kenna (Green Party), Aongus O Snodaigh (Sein Fein), Councillor Declan Bree, Labour Youth, SIPTU, Independent politicians, Brid Smith (SWP), Glenda Cimino (US Citizens in Ireland Against the War) David Norris (Senator), Robert Ballagh (Artist) and Dr. Abdullah Sayegh (Iraqi Citizen).
Performers include; Mary Coughlan (Singer), Róisín Elsafty (Singer), Mary O Malley (Poet) + others.
We will march from Fortunestown to the gates of Citywest Hotel (approx 1 mile) where we will hold a rally that includes;
- speeches and performances.
- naming of the Iraqi dead
- dropping of dolls at hotel gates to symbolise the killing of Iraqi children
- a silent die-in outside the Hotel Gates (weather pending)
- laying of headstones outside hotel gates
Please bring along home-made placards, dolls, banners, peace flags, rain gear (just in case of showers) etc. Lets make this a colourful, noisy demonstration against the wanton waste of this brutal war.

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7Are the SWP consciously excluding Joe Higgins from speaking or just not including his name in the press release?
And if so - why?
Is that Brid Smith the same Brid Smith that's in people before profit cause i thought people before profit was an independent kind of outfit?
1. Joe Higgins has been asked by IAWM (not SWP) can't yet confirm
2. Brid Smith will speak on behalf of SWP which is part of independent PBP
Happy to oblige
I am absolutely delighted that singers and poets will be coming out to show their disapproval of Fianna Fail and their war-cossetting. Now that they have come out, they should stay out, active and willing to be active, in defiance of the sluggish politicking of too many of their compadres. I will be at an Irish Writers' Union agm for half-two at Parnell Street, alas, and will not be able to attend. But let this be a signal-flare to all those writers and other artists who would sit on their hands, claiming some false Parnassian identity, while horror and injustice are perpetrated in various parts of the world, now and then with the complicity of our government. I wish the demo the very, very best, and my sincere best wishes to everyone taking part.
"- naming of the Iraqi dead" What- all of them? That's going to take a while isn't it?
Well done to all those involved and I will be there in spirit .
Could I ask if a protest at the dismantling of the Health Service be included. There are many people dying needlessly here in Ireland everyday as a result of this governments privatisation of the service
As preparations for Saturday’s Irish Anti War Movement’s picket of Fianna Fail’s Ard Fheis in Dublin’s City West entered their final stages, we are delighted to have received the following message of solidarity from Cindy Sheehan, one of the most prominent anti-war activists in the US:
"Dear Friends...Thank you for your steadfast work against the War Machine of the US government. It has long been my feeling that even though Ireland has no troops in Iraq, that allowing our torture planes and troops transport planes to land in Shannon is immoral and aids in the illegal and immoral occupation of Iraq.
Peace and Love
Cindy Sheehan "
Cindy will be visiting Ireland in the next few weeks and work with a number anti-war organisations in the campaign to make Shannon an election issue.
PS. Thanks to the awi comrades who have circulated details for tomorrow's picket/protest to their lists. See you all in City West tomorrow.
