Stand With Our Sisters in Iran

category international | gender and sexuality | other press author Tuesday April 03, 2007 15:36author by Jessie Raeder - The Feminist Majority Foundationauthor email jraeder at feminist dot orgauthor address 1600 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 801, Arlington, VA 22209author phone (703) 522-2214. If you were a feminist activist in Iran today, you would be under the constant threat of arrest for a simple action: asking for equal rights. On Sunday, March 4, 34 women’s rights activists were arrested for silently gathering outside Tehran’s Revolutionary Court to protest the prosecution of four women on trial that morning. The four women’s rights leaders are facing multiple charges including “acting against national security” for organizing a protest for women’s equality in Tehran in 2006.

These brave women, who represented many, if not most, of Iran's women's rights leaders, were held in Iran's notorious Evin prison. Although all but two of these women have now been released, they were barred from participating in a rally outside the Iranian parliament on International Women's Day.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Four women's rights activists were arrested on Monday for collecting signatures for a campaign demanding equal legal rights for women in Iran, an Iranian news agency reported.

The ILNA news agency said the women were collecting names for a so-called "one million signature campaign" demanding changes in what activists say are discriminatory laws against women in the Islamic Republic.

Yes there was a rumour going around at the end of March that the USA would launch a sneak assault against Iran right about now, Friday 6th April. Looks like that attack might not be occurring after all.

It does seem as though a USA strike against Iran is imminent, however. They have been increasing their military presence in the Persian gulf. It's likely we'll see an attack soon.

What are you saying? That we should endorse a US attack on Iran as act of solidarity with Iranian feminists? That the US is attacking Iran for their benefit and the benefit of the Iranian resistance?

This is exactly the type of ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ rubbish that will only help accelerate an illegal attack on Iran and exacerbate the chaos in Iraq.

Be careful what you wish for.

I thought it was just a comment on whats happening. An attack on Iran certainly would not help Iranian women. Bombs do not discriminate.

Unreserved apologies if I misread the post. It was just its juxtaposition to the previous post on the Iranian feminists struggle that gave me the impression it was a call for support of US aggression to aid the Iranian Resistance. Something I am fearful of and can see becoming a propaganda tool in the near future.
