I am a true believer in Regionalism for Spain.
But I am opposed to a Marxist based Independent country within a Country.
Otegui is an assassin, not a feedom fighter. De Juana also.
May they die for the principles of the obsolete 2008 ...Marxist teachings.
Long live the Souls of the Guardia Civil ,Soldiers and Civilians fallen!
Maybe I'm wrong but they seem to have originated from the same person - the same style and scant regard to presentation of information. Though I might sympathise with the frustration felt in many circles with the most recent public decisions made in regards to the Spanish / Basque problem, I don't think these last comments have added anything at all. I'm not even mildly curious to know who these "relics" are presuming that yet another Irish ignorant still thinks Fraga is in power or some such irrelevance. Since ETA broke the ceasefire Otegi has started a jail sentance of which he will most likely serve less than half - he has appealed for dialogue from his basque prison cell, the other "famous" Batasuna/ETA head de Juana Chaos didn't eat for the first four days of his return to custodial sentancing which resulted from the broken ceasefire, but is now back at his porridge and has requested permission to marry his longterm girlfriend who basque watchers will recall the "fascistic" Spanish authorities allowed conjugal visiting rights during his hunger strike..... it must be love. Ah! but there are many types of love. Squishy sexy lurve, brotherly chummy pat on the back love, the diakonos love of poor and smelly people you've never met but give up sweeties during Lent to offer a charitable penny or two to and the last most troublesome love of all - patriotic love.
In the last time since ETA broke the ceasefire 3 members of ETA have been arrested in Mexico, Canada and France and extradited to Spain. Supporters of ETA have returned to expressing their patriotic love by burning vans belonging to the telecom provider and attacking buses emptying same of their passengers and then burning the vehicles. And remnants of a political process are still there as last night on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the first post-Franco elections the King Juan Carlos Borbon appealed yet again for "sincere dialogue" one by one the different political parties have met with Zp to decide which way is forward. Yes, at the moment the only happy bodies are the private security shields and bodyguards whose antics have even left to front page stories of clashes with the Spanish secret service in Madrid the CNI as one of their charges appeared to be under surveillance by the spooks. Today the ETA newspaper Gara published an article alledging that the Spanish government continued to hold 2 table discussions in a third party European state with representatives of ETA and Batasuna up till the 27th of May - a report which has since been denied as roundly by the government as the suggestion it had the managing director of the electricty company under spooky tails.
Honestly if some wanted to - they could write passionate and inaccurate and utter tiff every day and append it as a comment. Indeed some using ETA slogans do so quite merrily on blogspaces dedicated to the very purpose. But dialogue must occur and the process will not end because the hardliners of ETA wish return to killing and maiming. Things don't work that way... especially not after bringing so many people up the garden path of a promised end to conflict. So on the 20th of this month the last round of all party contacts will see Zp and the Lehandakari meet and then we shall know if there is to be a new anti-terrorism pact, if ANV are to be illegalised (for not condemning violence and arson as they obliged themselves to do when they reconstitued to contest the elections and declared they would eschew violent means of achieving political change) and of course we will also know if the tourist season is to be disturbed.
In short - there is no news. Just repeated demonstrations that in IRish cyber space and in Ireland there are many who feel strongly about this issue on "two opposing sides" but who equally are surprisingly ill-informed and ignorant of the subtleties of the process which began many years ago. But one was never to look to the USA to find objective and illuminating comment on any aspect of the Irish British peace process - not that that process was or is in many ways comparable.
As I wrote in the penultimate comment to the report on the municipal and autonomous elections in the spanish state 2007 - we are still at the Navarra question. Let me remind both those who hate and love ETA that this process was always to be about ordinary people be their primary allegiance and patria Spain or Euskal Herria. It was not going to be just about ETA, Batasuna, ANV, PNV; the PSOE or PP, the Guardia Civil, the Ertzaintza or even for that matter the sort of people who can actualy listen to the angst punk music or watch the slaughter of bulls which either patria seems to require.
sin é.
you'll get your news & opinion & analysis soon enough - stop demanding comments.
What the hell is an Irish republican organisation, albeit ¨tiocfaidh Armani, doing supporting a right-wing loyalist/nazi front? Basque nationalists control :
their own parliament
tax collecting
police force
banks
industry
land ( and I mean practically all of it )
labour market
unions
the rackets
education...why go on...
and.. oh... forgot to mention!....death squads!!
Hmmm! Ring a bell?
Not all Basques believe they are racially pure or the chosen people. The best of them are on these fuckers´ deathlists! So give the good guys a break and stop supporting these ethno-centric toe rags!
"institutionalised torture, banning of democratic parties, Falangist relics still occupying many powerful positions and moronic cheerleaders for state repression youreself"
Obviously you do not live in Euskal Herria.
You cannot believe everything you read in A.I. reports.
Talking of relics - there is ONE Franquist "relic" in a position of power.
There are scores of G:A:L: "relics" in the Spanish institutions, including the interior minister.
No democratic parties have been banned - in fact many profoundly anti-democratic candidates have been allowed to stand.
I do not advocate repression of any sort, especially the state variety.
However, those in this part of the world who share my opinion are at risk. The threat comes not from an oppressive Spain, but from an oppressive Basque nationalist community.
Look at the lists of people who require bodyguards in Spain; you won't find many Basque nationalists there.
As for the moronic thing - ho hum.
Go study the free press. Get a cop on.
National-socialism, swastikas, paganism, anti-semitism, bigoted & fascistic attitudes.....
No, I'm not talking about Germany 1933.
Spain 2007. Hitler would be proud.
He would indeed, with institutionalised torture, banning of democratic parties, Falangist relics still occupying many powerful positions and moronic cheerleaders for state repression youreself.
Ironic that they are condemning the arrest of our Basque friends, but at the same time calling for the arrests and informing upon of Republican leaders and activists.
So far only the ERC party have spoken in negative terms about the prison sentence outside of the "abertzale socialist" movement describing it as a revenge and bad news and overtly political. Which of course it is - everything Mr OTegi does or is done to him is political. The left IU - ICV have called on Otegi to "disauthorise" ETA - the PP who meet with Zapatero on Monday are delighted for they long objected to what they called Otegi's immunity . On a light note it is more likely he do a frongach than a hungerstrike. On a heavy note if the ceasefire is not restored we might just see what his so called "immunity" was all about as ETA themselves avenge the hostage. On a very surreal note Paris Hilton has been sent back to jail after faking a medical disaster yesterday. You pick your celebrities. You know your poison. More people died of drunk driving in Ireland than from the troubles. There is an appalling futility to how all sectors of society on the peninsula are reacting to the collapse of the peace process & oddly the sentiment of betrayal & of having been cheated is very palpable & is being expressed by every side to cover & distract from their own failures. So a quick reminder :-
There can be no other long term outcome for either the Basque or Spanish peoples other than a peace process and conflict resolution. But it aint going to happen in one Madrid government's duration. It would be just so longterm & wise if everyone remembered that before anyone else dies or gets hurt.
National-socialism, swastikas, paganism, anti-semitism, bigoted & fascistic attitudes.....
No, I'm not talking about Germany 1933.
Spain 2007. Hitler would be proud.
He would also be tickled to find Irish republicans supporting this Basque/nazi bullshit.
Ignacio de Juana is a mass-murderer/serial-killer/psychopath.
He is unrepentant.
He has not passed a parole board.
He has served only 18 years of a sentence of some 3000 years.
The Spanish government had NO RIGHT to free him in the first place.
His 115-day "hunger strike" (ham sandwiches, honey etc) was an insult to the memory of Bobby Sands.
He belongs in prison. May he rot there.
Otegui is a permanent collaborator of ETA.
He is a convicted kidnapper. (a crime for which he served just 3 years - only in Spain could this happen)
For years now he has flouted with impunity all the laws of the land pertaining to terrorism.
It's about time he was locked up too.
Spain has had more than enough of the insolent cockiness of Otegui and his ilk.
