Romas

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | opinion/analysis author Thursday July 26, 2007 16:25author by Con Carroll Report this post to the editors

have we forgot about history.

first they came for the Jews, I didn't speak out I was not a Jew. then they came for the Communists. I didn't speak out. then they came for people with disabilities. I didn't speak out. then they came for me. no one spoke out for me.

listening to-day news at 1 RTE
I listened to crime correspondent, Paul Reynolds. prompting the minister for justice, Brian Lenihan. to take action against members of staff from Pavee Point Dublin. for standing in solidarity with the Roma people who were living on the round-about. even to the point of stopping funding which Pavee Point recieves. the ministers response was that he would be investigating all levells. in which pavee point staff played a part. another person who runs a charity called smiles, which is based in Romania. accused Roma people who have been living here for 10 years for encouraging people. to come to Ireland.

I am not jumping on any band-wagon. the political history of the Roma people, is very interesting. and what they had to put up with from government ministers in Eastern Europe. also their living conditions in Europe. off course thr right wing media agenda of Irish Independent to-day encourages action against people who stood in solidarity.

a injury to one is a injury to all.
