category limerick | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Sunday April 20, 2008 11:50author by John Lannon Report this post to the editors

"Shannon as a Stopover for War and Human Rights Abuse - Not in My Backyard!" - A talk by Ciaron O'Reilly, non-violent anti-war and human rights activist, followed by discussion, on Thursday, 24 April at 8pm in Room C1060, University of Limerick.

A talk will be given by Ciaron O'Reilly, a non-violent anti-war and human rights activist, on Thursday, 24 April, at 8pm in Room C1060, University of Limerick. In the talk, Ciaron will share from his wide ranging experiences and speak about the links between war and human rights abuses. He will reflect in particular on the global situation and on the role of Shannon Airport in facilitating war and attacks on human rights. The talk will be followed by discussion on responses to the ongoing use of Shannon airport by the US military, and the ongoing failure of the Irish government to investigate its role in CIA networks of torture.

The event is co-hosted by Cosantori Siochana, Amnesty International and the Peace Society.

Ciaron O'Reilly is a longtime nonviolent anti-war and human rights activist, and has served two years in prison - U.S., Australia and Limerick - for nonviolent resistance to war and in defense of human rights. Ciaron has also worked extensively with East Timorese, African, Arab and Persian refugees fleeing human rights abuses, the homeless in Australia/US/London/ Dublin and prisoners.

In 2006 Ciaron was acquitted of $2.5 million criminal damage to a U.S. war plane at Shannon Airport (www.peaceontrial.com). In 1991 he was convicted of disarming a B-52 Bomber in New York.
