Tackling the Liars on Lisbon - Gilmore & Kenny lost for words!!

Tackling the Liars on Lisbon

05/06/08

éirígí activists gathered in Dublin’s Henry Street this afternoon (Thursday) to coincide with a pre-planned walk-about by some of the luminaries of the pro-Lisbon Treaty camp.

Telling it as it is!!
Telling it as it is!!

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny, Labour leader Eamon Gilmore and Fianna Fáil minister Barry Andrews united to canvass the city centre location in the hope of garnering yes votes for next week’s (June 12) referendum.

However, onlookers witnessed éirígí’s Uncle EU shed some light on the realities of the Lisbon Treaty, much to the embarrassment of the establishment parties.

Dressed in attire reminiscent of the infamous US military recruitment icon Uncle Sam, but with the colours switched to the blue and yellow of the European Union, Uncle EU informed voters through a loudhailer what the establishment parties want them to back but are afraid to spell out.

These included: “Vote yes to Lisbon for a militarised Europe,” “Vote yes for more battle groups,” “Vote yes for a European defence agency,” and “Vote yes for a United States of Europe”.

It is quite amazing how journalists feel the need to lie.

Kerr writes: "Only at the Ilac Centre did Eamon Gilmore try to disarm him again, as Gaeilge. "Cad is ainm duit? Carbh as tu?" he queried.

Uncle Sam paled. One of his helpers rowed in, telling Eamon to "Na bi ag pleacaiocht" (meaning 'Leave him alone and don't be messing').

But the Labour/Fine Gael tactic had worked. Uncle Sam huddled with his colleagues and duly disappeared, leaving the deflated canvassers to find their rhythm, stride and voice.

They trundled down Mary Street, before canvassing Henry Street again -- minus Uncle Sam."

She probably is a failed novelist or something. I wonder why?

Anyways, this is really what happened (I swear!!)

Kenny, Gilmore, Andrews & Costelloe didn't know what to be doing with themselves when Uncle EU started to tell it as it is. After a while of irritation and (I would think) embarrassment, Gilmore started asking UNcle EU where he was from (in not very good Irish), most likely trying to either rattle Uncle EU (he probably thought he really was a Yank!), or make it look like he was engaging him seriously. He never responded to the points made about Lisbon, of course. He kept going on with the 'where are you from' (in Irish - basically implying 'what the f**k is it to you...foreigner')

Anyways, a member of éirígí responded to him (in Irish), "Don't be playing games. If you want to talk to someone in Irish about Lisbon, I'll talk to you". He went even redder!! He was also also if he knew who's birthday it was. He didn't know. He was told it was Connolly's, and was asked what he thought Connolly would think of a United States of Europe? He went even redder, and tried to defend himself by saying he is a socialist. He was told him not to be having a laugh. He went even redder

That. Ms. Kerr is what happened. Have a little look at the RTE footage if you don't remember Connolly being mentioned

Well done to éirígí. I liked the question - "what would James Connolly have voted for?"

I for one will use my vote, a vote it took generations of sacrifice to gain, based on advice given by a man in a fake beard, top hat and with a megaphone.

Wise up

Well done to all the activists for that original action, the type of stuff the media just can't ignore.
