Dublin [Pro-]Feminist Mens Group Meeting

category dublin | gender and sexuality | event notice author Monday July 21, 2008 15:22author by Spikenard - Dublin [Pro-]Feminist Mens Group Report this post to the editors

After the success of our mens group discussion hosted by RAG two weeks ago it was agreed that the next meeting will take place on Wednesday 23rd July at 7pm at the EENGO (that's opposite the Palace on Camden Street above Petland).

It was suggested at the RAG meeting that we should experiment with a men only format with this meeting so apologies to women who might have been interested in coming along! Since we're only getting started we don't have an official trans policy yet but if you're a trans person interested in coming along then please don't be discouraged! The provisional aims that have been suggested for this meeting are (1) to get to know each other better so that we can begin to build trust within the group and (2) an introduction to feminism.

If this sounds as interesting to you as it does to us then we look forward to seeing you there.

I wasn't able to get to the RAG meeting but I'm an active member of Choice. I'm curious about who is involved in this group. If you let people know who is already involved it might attract more (or less!) guys to the meeting.

It turns out that a Seomra Spraoi sub group is using the room from 6:30 until 7:30 so the mens group meeting is being postponed for half an hour until 7:30.

the group is a new one. there's no group(s) behind it as such. attendance at the last meeting was very mixed. there were people i recognised and people i'd never seen before. it was quite encouraging.

I don’t think this sort of anonymously posted article will help to "build trust " . Like Pat I ‘m curious about who is running the show ,but good luck with the project all the same . It seems to me that somebody like Pat who has been involved with the feminist movement for many years would have been able to make a valuable contribution to any introduction to feminism . I can’t fathom out why he wasn’t invited to join the group from the outset .

no particular reason why i should have been invited over lots of others; anyway theres an open invitation now. but i have found out more about the group (through the old boys network). To quote: "there are people from RAG, Choice Ireland, Seomra Spraoi, WSM, Dublin Food Co-op etc. already involved" .

Sheesh! It's a new feminist men's group which has come out of a lot of things. There's been talk of a feminist men's group around Dublin for years now. After an 'overcoming male privilege' discussion group at the RAG summercamp, some feminist guys decided to solidify things more. People from a lot of organisations (Choice Ireland, Seomra Spraoi, WSM, RAG, Food Co-op, Lashback etc.) were involved in the first meeting. There was an open invitation on Indymedia to come to that as well. Lots of new faces turned up at that meeting, which was encouraging.

Pat was invited trough the open invitation on indymedia like everyone else- it was also posted about on the Choice Ireland, Seomra Spraoi and RAG mailing lists, among others.

Why not come along? You're more that welcome.

What's happening with this group? I really hope it's still going to go ahead. Seems like the second mix-gendered meeting didn't happen
