You can read about it here:
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2008/0717/1....html
(and ponder what would happen if you took your video camera down to your local beach and started taping the kids)
its past time for a bit of a march in castlebar.
I would just like to point out to Len that Shell have in fact been filming people swimming and changing while down on Glengad beach. Although Shell initally issued a statement saying that no swimmers were filmed, this has been proven to be false by a Mayo Echo journalist who saw the security guards playing back footage they had of a swimmer entering the water. The journalist also saw them point the video camera towards the swimmer as he was changing.
Now I'm not saying the security guards are padoephiles but the filming they are doing down there is totally inappropriate. It is becoming clear that the securities plan all along was to try to intimadate people off the beach so Shell could go ahead with destroying a section of it.
Best wishes & praise to the people who have the guts to resist the corporate & State attempts to ruin their land, & who are defending the rights of ALL of us.
Had a google alert and also email from solidarity group re the arrest of about a dozen protesters at Glengad including Willie Corduff and John Monaghan. We were shocked at their treatment and were just about to ring Belmullet police station when we read on RTE News that they had been released.
What disgraceful treatment of legitimate protesters. No arrests take place of Shells security staff or management who endorse taking photos of children, priests and anyone else in the vicinity. No arrests either of the Garda who rough up protesters.
why do the gardai allow shell and the security company invoved to video young kids and yet arrest protestors?
12 held over Corrib pipeline protest
Tuesday, 22 July 2008 18:01
Twelve people have been arrested in Co Mayo have following the latest protest against the Corrib gas pipeline.
The 12, who are members of a newly formed community group, were taking part in a protest at Glengad Beach where the pipeline is due to brought ashore.
The group is opposing the location of the €300m gas refinery 9km inland at Bellanboy.
They were arrested for public order offences and have been taken to Bellmullet Garda Station.
The group says it wants the gas refinery relocated to an area on the north coast of Mayo where they say will present less of a health and safety hazard to the local community and the environment.
Thanks for map of proposed new pipeline route. It is still far too close to houses. My heart goes out to the community and how they must be feeling, Its hard to imagine how one would feel if their home, families and safety were threatened . I hope John Gormley who appears to be a total fraud starts acting like Minister of Environment very soon. The people of Rossport need to say NO, and remember that your health and safety is priceless. Well Done to all those involved in the long hard struggle, its nice to know that some people appreciate this beautiful pristine area in mayo.
.
Homes to be removed
John Monaghan & Naoise O'Mongain have been arrested at Glengad, the landfall area of the pipe, for refusing to allow Shell to work there in circumstances where they are questioning the consents/authority/permission for Shell to be doing this landfall construction work at this time, given that the 'new pipeline route' still awaits planning permission.
Neither Shell, Dept. Marine, National Parks & Wildlife Service, An Garda Siochana can or will say what permission exists for this work to be happening at this stage in time.
More locals being threatened with arrest on the cliff face are standing their ground.
Indymedia Report coming soon from Glengad in the next few hours.
Ring Belmullet garda station, ask for the member in charge, and ask him/her to pass your best wishes to the prisoners. 097 81038 or 097 81206
