Justin Trudeau wants to prorogue Parliament to buy time before the election. Voters will punish him for it, says Prof James Allan, but it's a mistake he must be allowed to make without activist judges getting in the way.

Jordan Peterson should make his mind up about Christianity, critics say. Prof James Alexander disagrees: he's a profound Jungian explorer who wants to help a secularised world see why Christianity still matters.

A short guide to hardware with Ciaron O'Reilly

category international | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Monday September 22, 2008 20:35author by Decwell's Report this post to the editors

Ciaron O'Reilly discusses all your hardware needs in this three minute rough cut from a forthcoming film on activism in Ireland.

Hammers, mattocks and other pieces of equipment are all weighed up by this seasoned activist. A shears (or even a scissors) does not make it out of the bag, so perhaps the film will act as a timely reminder of the need to raise funds for anti-war causes (in ways other than sponsored haircuts).

Happily there is a fundraiser planned for October 9th in the Lower Deck.

Come along and discuss the various uses hardware can be put to.

YOUTUBE (3.37) - "Hey Presto - Ploughshares Movement re-equipped from Garda Issued Potato Bag!
http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=xvaA4kfrcJI

BACKGROUND

On Feb 3rd '03, 5 Catholic Workers -Deirdre Clancy, Nuin Dunlop, Karen Fallon, Damien Moran and Ciaron O'Reilly made their way into Shannon Airport, County Clare/Ireland, to disarm a U.S. Navy warplane en route to the invasion of Iraq. Known as the "Pitstop Ploughshares" they were arrested, their hammers and shrine to the war dead confiscated, charged with $U.S. 2 1/2 million "criminal damage", they were initially held on remand at Limerick Prison, released on strict bail conditions and were put on trial 3 times at Dublin's historic Four Courts over the next 3 years.
www.peaceontrial.com

In August 06 they were acquitted unanimously by a jury of all charges. In early '08 Cork lawyer Joe Noonan, who had defended the Pitstops in all three trials, made application on behalf of O'Reilly to the Ennis court for return of all property. The Garda opposed the return of the Ploughshares hammers, although two of the hammers had been previously returned by the F.B.I. and British police following their use in at least six ploughsares actions in those countries (all but one of the actions having resulted in conviction and jail time for the ploughshares participants).

A hearing was set for July 25th. 08, the second anniversary of the Pitstop Four Courts acquittal, for the application hearing in front of Judge Mangan in Ennis Court, County Clare. This was the same judge that had imposed the strict original bail conditions on the Pitstops in Feb. 03. Days before the hearing the Garda dropped their opposition. O'Reilly returned to Shannon Garda station, where the Pitstops had been originally taken on arrest in 03, to accept the return of the hammers and other property. The hammers were returned to O'Reilly in a Garda issued potato bag http://www.indymedia.ie/article/88451 quickly identified as such by one of "Hammer Pick Up Support Crew" who had grown up on a farm in Kilkenny.

The jury said it all. ....Acquitted on all counts.....unanimously. A pannel of twelve Irish citizens found the CW's innocent of the charge of criminal damage brought by thr Irish State.
The defence of ;lawful excuse' ..to prevent war was allowed in.
Where are the lawyers against the war now.......If the Shannon 5 are innocent then it is only proper to assume that the State is guilty of participating in war crimes.....where are the lawsuits from the suits in law. Wonder if the DPP could be coerced into filking charges against Bertie, Cowen, Harney et.al.

Well done to you all.

Hi Ciaron,

great to see you in such good form. I thought the video was a real hoot. The contrast between the low-tech tools you talked about and the sophisticated hi-tech weapons of mass destruction, which you targeted, was really something to meditate on. I hope one day all your "weaponry" finds its way into a museum which will do homage to all the brave protests against the obscenity of war.
