Why Do WE have to Pay for THEIR Crisis?!

Charlie McGreevy having introduced Medical Cards as an automatic right for the over 70s in 2001 in an attempt by Fianna Fail to win support at the upcoming General Election, another Fianna Fail Minister for Finance, Brian Lenehan, then proposed taking away this automatic right and reintroducing a means test. Anyone with an income in access of e241.00 per week was to lose their Medical Card.

That meant people over seventy who had worked and paid taxes all their lives and may have had a small occupational pension would have lost their medical cards.

It was a disgrace.

All this is in an effort to save e100 million! Yet the same Minister for finance had no problem providing a guarantee to the banks of almost e500 billion! Northern Ireland, which experienced nothing like the wealth that occurred in the Republic of Ireland during the years of the Celtic Tiger, is about to introduce free medical prescriptions for all, but then, they enjoy universal free health care.

People Before Profit Alliance (Kerry) is holding a protest against the budget, and a candlelight vigil for the death of the Irish Welfare State.

Billed earlier as a Medical Card protest, this Budget protest is a reminder of what we could have lost -- and what we will still lose: Class Size increases, and a 1% levy on us, but still leaving Corporation Tax untouched and screwing us to fund the dig out for the banks!

Not only did People before Profit call for all people over seventy to be entitled to Medical Cards, but we also call for the scrapping of the two tier health service, the banning of private health care, and for a universal free health system to be introduced.

Protest & Vigil
Venue: The Square, Tralee
Date: Thurs 23d Oct @ 7PM

People before Profit Alliance have a local group in Kerry which meets regularly and are involved in campaigning for a better health service and on numerous other issues including housing, transport, workers rights, the environment, public ownership of natural resources and opposition to war.
