ABOUT VOLTA CINEMA////////////////////

FEATURE: CARANDIRU ////////////////////////

Carandiru (2003) is a Brazilian and Argentine film directed by Hector Babenco. The picture is based on the book Estação Carandiru (English: Carandiru Station) by Dr. Drauzio Varella, a physician and AIDS specialist.[1]

Carandiru tells some of the stories that occurred in Carandiru Penitentiary, which was the biggest prison in Latin America. The histories culminate with the 1992 massacre where 111 prisoners died, 102 killed by police. In 2002, one year before the release of the film, the Carandiru Penitentiary was closed.

FARTING AROUND BRAIN/EYE CANDY: THE HUMAN BEHAVIOUR EXPERIMENTS //////////////////////

Why would four young men watch their friend die, when they could have intervened to save him? Why would a woman obey phone commands from a stranger to strip-search an innocent employee? What makes ordinary people perpetrate extraordinary abuses, like the events at Abu Ghraib?

Documentarian Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room) revisits these three famous behavioral studies to explore some perennial questions about why human beings commit unethical acts under particular social conditions. After seeing this film, you may never say “bad apples” again.

Thanks to everyone that made it over to Seomra Sproai last night for the second Volta Cinema Screening. We in no way anticipated the crowd that showed up, next time we'll sort out a better seating arrangement and do our best to ensure people's views aren't restricted and such. If people are curious, we showed parts of a documentary called Route 181 before the main feature. You can source a torrent file of it below.
