Human rights in Mexico- a report from the field

category galway | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Saturday March 14, 2009 19:03author by Amnesty Galway - Amnesty International Report this post to the editors

Amnesty International Freedom Cafe 2-3 Middle St Galway. 7PM 24th March Admission Free

Free public discussion on the current state of human rights in Mexico by Elise Maracan of Amnesty Internationals’ Mexico Research and Campaigns team.

Galway- Mexico Amnesty International Group is delighted to host a public discussion on the current state of human rights in Mexico. The visiting speaker, Elise Maracan from the Amnesty International Secretariat in London has recently returned from a fact-finding mission to Mexico and as well as doing this public talk, she will be advising the group on how best to focus their campaigning over the coming months.

One of the topics to be discussed is the escalation, in recent weeks of the harassment, kidnapping, torture and even murder of well-known human and labour rights activists in Mexico. These reported incidents show that the increases in such human rights abuses have occurred in areas predominantly populated by minority indigenous groups. It appears that state institutions such as the police and military may be the perpetrators of much of this violence.

The Galway Amnesty International Group, which meets every second Tuesday, has been working on Mexican issues for the past two years. They have an open invitation to new members who wish to join them in their campaigning. This talk will make an ideal introduction for those who would like to be involved. All interested are welcome to attend.

There is no admission charge but donations are welcome.
