Tribute to the men and women of 1916

Easter Rising 1916: A tribute to the men and women of 1916 - 1923.

The North Inner City Folklore Project on the occasion of commemorating the 1916 Easter Rising by honouring the men and women who fought for Irish Freedom.

On Easter Monday 13 April 2009 the commemoration will take the following forms:-

1 At Liberty Hall, 12 noon, a pageant will take place which will include the unfurling of the flag which the Citizen Army hoisted a week before the Rising. On that occasion a young inner city girl, Molly O Reilly was given the honour by James Connolly. A young woman, Susan Brennan Healy a niece of Molly O Reilly, will receive the flag from James Connolly-Herron a great grandson of James Connolly and re-enact the hoisting of the flag. They will be accompanied by a colour party dressed in the uniforms of Cumann na mBan and the Citizen Army.

2 The assembled gathering will include relatives of the 1916 leaders will then march to the GPO led by pipers and the colour party. Participants will carry photographs and names of the men and women who took part in the 1916 Rising.

3 Wreaths will be laid at the GPO, at 13.00, in honour of the men and women, by Constance Corcoran, a daughter of Molly O Reilly and Mrs Steenson, whose mother was a member of the GPO/Clerys garrison.

4 After the reading of the proclamation Noirin Byrne will give a short tribute with a call for the erection of a permanent memorial in O ‘Connell Street to the women who risked their lives for Irish freedom.

5 After a lament by the pipers the assembly will march to 16 Moore Street, the last headquarters of the Provisional Government, to show their support for the retaining of that historic Street.

This event is scheduled for Easter Monday 13th April (not March as indicated), it also appears inadvertantly to have been listed on the events page on the 8th April. Can a mod move it to the correct date?
