From handing over the Chagos Islands to compensating Gerry Adams, Starmer's decisions owe more to human rights lawyers than sound politics. He needs to sack his chum Lord Hermer before he shipwrecks his Government.

United for Iran, global day of action

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Friday July 24, 2009 00:32author by Free Iran - Free Iranauthor email amsetor at gmail dot comauthor phone 0872805780 Report this post to the editors

Rally to voice International solidarity with Iranian people

To mark the United for Iran, global day of action, the Free Iran Group in Ireland will be holding a protest on Saturday 25th July at 13:00-15:00 in front of the general Post Office (GPO) in O’Connell Street.

Following the sham elections in Iran, there have been widespread demonstrations and protests around the country. According to reports from inside Iran, more than 300 people have been killed and over 10,000 arrested. The mullah’s regime has repeatedly opened fire on the peaceful demonstrations of a nation who only cried for freedom and democracy.

In a bid to keep the shocking number of killings secret, the clerical regime has been burying the victims secretly. According to reports, a number of people have been buried in some parts of Khavaran cemetery and others in a special section in Behesht-e Zahra cemetery. The regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security and other suppressive organs have been threatening the families of those killed not to hold funerals for their loved ones or disclose the regime's abhorrent crimes.

We warn against the intensification of torture and execution of thousands of those detained during the nationwide uprising of the Iranian people, and call on all competent international bodies and human rights organizations to refer the regime’s dossier on crimes to the UN Security Council and to adopt binding measures aimed at ending the violent suppression of the detainees.

What we want:

1. REGIME CHANGE IN IRAN. After 30 years of dictatorship, the Iranian regime is constitutionally, and ideologically incapable of reform.

2. FREE ELECTIONS IN IRAN UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE UNITED NATIONS. Under the mullah’s rule, all candidates of presidential elections have to be qualified by the Guardian Council in order to run in the elections, which rules out any candidates independent of the Velayat-e-Faqih. The people are left to choose between bad and worse. Even then as the recent election has shown, people’s votes mean nothing and they will bring whoever benefits them at the time.

3. PROSECUTION OF THE LEADERS IN THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT. 120,000 have been executed including the massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in 1988. 100's types of inhumane torture are used in Iran’s prisons. Those responsible must be held accountable for crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide.

It's good to see the list of Nobel peace laureates lining up to support the Green Wave for democracy and tomorrow's Global Day of Action . Mairead Maguire and Baron Trimble may have different views on matters such as Israel and Palestine, but it is gratifying to see that ,when it comes to Iran , the two laureates have stood together for democracy , justice and human rights. Desmond Tutu has also leant his voice .
