Jump To Comment: 1 2Since the begining of the second intifada there were dozens of assassinations of radical Palestinian nationalists and Islamic fundamentalist guerilla leaders as they held conferences in moving cars or SUV's usually by rockets fired from Israeli helicopter gunships. These leaders were sold out by high ranking Palestinian rivals who were opposed to the struggle and want to enter into negotiations with the Israelis or took the opportunity to remove rivals in their path before continuing the intifada with themselves at the helm. Another motivation is financial rewards they would recieve from the European Union who have been heavily involved in funding the government of the West Bank and projects to improve infrastructure that have line the pockets and enriched the ruling factions of the Palestinian elite of the Fatah movement.
Hamas - a movement that was sponsored by Israel to undermine devout Palestinian Muslim support for the secular nationalist PLO and later PA authority - which subsquently defeated the Fatah movement during the bloody take over of the Gaza strip was used to split Palestinians into the two irreconcilable statelets, Gaza and the West Bank.
The Hamas movement is now currently divided between a pro-Syrian faction that following the direction of Damascus which is seeking peace with West like fellow rogue state Libya and a pro-Iranian faction in league with Lebanese Hezbollah who favoured the continuation of rocket attacks on Southerm Israel that provoked a disastrous Israeli counter attack on Lebanon in 2006 and Gaza in early 2009.
Currently the "peace faction" of Hamas holds to the upper hand over the radicals who they are currently in the process of crushing evident by an armed assault on a radical religious leader and his private army last week in order to appease Israel.
Behind the scenes both the Abbas Fatah movement and Hamas are increasingly and heavily infiltrated by Israeli intelligence who are offered a lucrative peace carrot.
The aging leadership of the Palestinians who like their Republican counterparts in Northern Ireland have been fighting since the late 1960's with limited change over the political situation to show for tremendous bloodshed and sacrifice are more ammenable to peace especially with a more sympathetic American President in the Oval Office who is offering similar carrots to Iraqi insurgents to get behind the Iraqi government or to Taliban commanders who want to come in from the cold in Afghanistan.
Much more should be made of the fact that Abbas's term has expired. He has less legitimacy than Mugabe or George W.
It is a disgrace that he can posture as the voice of moderation or some such.
