 An interview with Shane, a member of the Berlin anarchist media group about conditions in the city and the anarchist movement there. While on a recent visit to Berlin I interviewed Shane, a member of the Berlin anarchist media group, who was the organiser of my public meeting on 'Organised anarchism in Ireland'. The conversation covers a number of areas including the economy of the city, gentrification resistance, strikes, tortured geography, the legacy of the 80's squatting movement, the collective housing movement today, Kopi and its many bars, the place of the collective houses in the Berlin left, the drawbacks of the 'scene', organised anarchism in Berlin, the nature of the autonom groups, post apartheid South Africa, economic re-structuring, struggles around service delivery, the role on 'internationals' in the Berlin scene and anarchist publishing with the anarchist media group.

Jump To Comment: 1While in Berlin I shot this video inside the NSA spybase on the Teufelberg (Devil's Mountain), Berlin. At the end of the war the rubble of Berlin was collected into huge mounds. In west Berlin the largest of these known as Devils Mountain was used to bury a Nazi training school. Later the American built a large NSA spy base on top to listen in to communications in both West & East Berlin. After the NSA pulled out there was a failed attempt to turn the base into luxury apartments. Then it was fenced off. But people cut the fence to get into the ruins of the base. Today the fence is patched and patched again but still the holes are cut.
